The Nepal Loktantrik Forum (translation: Nepal Democratic Forum) is a political party in Nepal. The party was formed on April 5, 2017, after the merger of the Madheshi People's Right Forum (Democratic) Nepal, Rastriya Janamukti Party (Democratic) Nepal and Dalit Janajati Party, Nepal.[1]

History

The Nepal Democratic Forum has experienced a series of rapid mergers from April to June 2017 that consolidated the party. On April 20, the Tharuhat Tarai Party, led by Bhanu Ram Chaudhary, merged with the Nepal Democratic Forum.[2] Three weeks later, the Rastriya Janata Party, Nepal People's Party, United Nepal Republican People's Party, and Shanti Party Nepal decided to merge into the party on May 7.[3] Finally, on June 2, the Liberal Democratic Party merged into the party.

The party decided to join the Pushpa Kamal Dahal-led government on May 8 with Bijay Kumar Gachhadar as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Federal Affairs and Local Development, Jitendra Dev as Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, and Gopal Dahit as Minister for Land Reforms and Management.[4] The Citizen Socialist Party merged into the party on June 10.

On June 3, party chairman Bijay Kumar Gachhadar supported the proposal by Pushpa Kamal Dahal to endorse Sher Bahadur Deuba as Prime Minister.[5] He joined the Sher Bahadur Deuba-led cabinet on June 7 as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Federal Affairs and Local Development.[6]

2017 Nepalese local elections

Since the party was not registered as Nepal Democratic Forum before the deadline set by the Election Commission, the party contested as Madheshi People's Right Forum, Nepal (Democratic) in the first phase of the elections.[7] Initially, the party had a total of 334 candidates running in the first phase of the election. Six members of the party were eventually elected:

  • from Roshi rural municipality in Kavrepalanchowk: one ward chair, two ward members and one female dalit ward member
  • and one ward member from Thuli Bheri municipality in Rolpa.
