Riccardo Silva is an Italian businessman and investor. He is the founding partner and shareholder in MP & Silva, President and co-owner of Miami FC and owner of Silva International Investments, which has investments in a range of companies across media, sports, entertainment, art and real estate. Riccardo Silva is also owner of the Silva Family art collection, and previously served as CEO of the Milan Channel.

Early life and education

Riccardo Silva was born in 1970 in Milan, the grandson of the founder of Italsilva – Gruppo Desa, one of Italy’s largest chemical groups. His maternal family, Fabbri, is known for its publishing company, Fabbri Editori, which is now part of the RCS Media Group. Silva completed his studies at Bocconi University and Tulane University.[1]

Early career

In 1998 Riccardo Silva launched MP Web, an internet start-up of the Milan-based Media Partners Group (now Infront Media), managing sports rights and content for mobile and Internet platforms, which first came to prominence in the 1990s.[1] In 2001 Riccardo Silva became CEO of Milan Channel, the official TV channel of AC Milan football club, and guided the international development of the channel.[2]

MP & Silva

Riccardo Silva founded MP & Silva in 2004 and it has since ‘grown to rival the big beasts of the sports agency world’.[1] MP & Silva is an international media rights company based in London,[1] with 18 offices around the globe.[3]

The company manages sports TV rights for a range of international sporting events and distributes around 10,000 hours of programming to some 500 broadcasters globally. The company's portfolio includes FIFA World Cup rights, senior European football leagues, Grand Slam tennis, motor racing, handball, baseball, volleyball, boxing and the Asian Games.[4] MP & Silva is also a major distributor of the English Premier League across a number of countries around the world. The company is estimated to have had revenues of $750m[5] in 2014-15.

It was announced on May 24, 2016 that Chinese brokerage Everbright Securities and internet entertainment company Beijing Baofeng Technology bought a 65% stake in MP & Silva[6] following a competitive sales process with interest from international companies and equity funds.[7] Under the strategic partnership, Baofeng and MP & Silva will cooperate on management of sports media rights, as well as sponsorships and consulting services.[8] Baofeng also plans to launch its own sports platform Baofeng Sports, which is expected to work closely with MP & Silva and will focus on online sports videos.[9] Riccardo Silva and Andrea Radrizzani had owned 80 percent of MP & Silva before the sale. The company's former owners retained a combined stake in MP & Silva of 35%. The deal valued MP & Silva at $1.4 billion.[10] Former MP & Silva Chief Executive Marco Auletta announced that "Everbright and Baofeng have emerged as the right partners to support our international growth and help us expand in adjacent fields such as virtual reality, where Baofeng is a key player in China."[6]

In 2016 Riccardo Silva established and is now owner of Silva International Investments. Silva International Investments is an investment company which manages and invests in assets across multiple sectors, including media, sport, fashion, technology and real estate.[11][12] The company is based in Mayfair, London and has offices in Monaco and Miami.

In 2015, Riccardo Silva became President and co-owner of Miami FC,[1] the soccer club that competes in the USA’s North American Soccer League (NASL), with legendary AC Milan and Italy star, Paolo Maldini.[2] Miami FC was unveiled in May 2015, and began playing in April 2016. The Head Coach of Miami FC is AC Milan and Italy legend, Alessandro Nesta.[12]

It took less than a year to develop Miami FC from an idea to a reality.[13] Miami FC played the first match in its inaugural season in the North American Soccer League (NASL) on April 2, 2016, drawing 1-1[14] away against local team, the Fort Lauderdale Strikers.

A crowd of 10,156 saw Miami FC play its first ever home match at Florida International University (FIU) on April 9, 2016 watching the team draw 1-1- against the Tampa Bay Rowdies.[15] Amongst the crowd were many youth soccer club members, who were treated to pre-match and half-time performances from the Colombian pop star, Maluma.[16]

The summer of 2016 saw the club strengthen their squad when in June they signed Ghanaian midfielder Kwadwo Poku;[17] he previously played for the New York City Football Club. They also acquired Jonny Steele from Ottawa Fury, in July 2016[18] and Vincenzo Rennella in August 2016, before the close of the transfer window.[19] The signings proved successful - on August 6, Miami FC set a new scoring record of 4-0 against Minnesota United.[20]

On 16th July 2016 Miami FC, in partnership with Equality Florida, hosted Miami FC Pride Nights. 50% of all ticket sales went towards the Pulse Victim's fund.[21]

In recognition of the support given by Riccardo Silva to the Florida International University (FIU) Athletic Department since 2015, Florida International University (FIU) announced the exclusive naming rights for the Miami FC and Panther football team’s home field, which is now called “Riccardo Silva Stadium.”[22][23][24]

Riccardo Silva is also well-known for leading the project to establish the Americas Champions League (ACL)[25] tournament involving teams from North America, South America and the Caribbean. The intention is for a 64-team competition to mirror the UEFA Champions League's format, which could generate an estimated $500 million in television and marketing rights—quintupling the current annual take-ins for the CONCACAF Champions League and CONMEBOL's Copa Libertadores combined.[25] It is set to become the all-Americas version of Europe’s popular UEFA Champions League,[26] and has been described as ‘a vehicle to help place the country at the forefront of game’.[27]

In 2016 Riccardo Silva's company, Silva International Investments, commissioned a report by Deloitte,[28][29] on promotion and relegation in United States professional soccer[30][31]. The report, published in November 2016, found that promotion and relegation could assist US club soccer[32] in capitalising on the undoubted interest in, and potential for, the sport in USA.[33][34] The Telegraph reported that Riccardo Silva wants NASL to be more attractive to fans.[35]

The 2017 season has proven to be hugely successful for Miami FC. In June 2017, Miami FC played their first competitive fixture against an MLS club, beating Orlando City SC 3-1 in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup with Stefano Pinho scoring a hat-trick.[36] The Telegraph reported Riccardo Silva saying: “It was the biggest game in our short history so to win so convincingly against a fantastic club like Orlando City was a great result for us,".[37] In July, Miami FC captured the 2017 spring NASL title with a 7-0 win over the San Francisco Deltas.[38] In October 2017, the club completed an historic double, becoming the first team in NASL history to win both the Spring and Autumn titles in the same season. In an interview with El Nuevo Herald Riccardo Silva stated that "The fact that we won the Spring and Autumn tournaments does not mean there are not more things that we have to fight for".[39]

In August 2017, with a shared belief in that the benefits of soccer should be shared by the many, and not the few, Miami FC joined forces with the National Premier Soccer League's Kingston Stockade FC in filing a request for arbitration at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).[40][41][42][43]

In February 2017 Riccardo's company, Silva International Investments, invested more than $1M into Mast Capital, a Miami based real estate and development company.[11]

Silva International Investments also owns MP Management, Europe’s second largest modelling and talent network with agencies in Milan, Miami, Paris, Stockholm and Gothenburg.[44] The network acquired its Paris agency from Major Model Management in August 2015,[45] and in April 2017 announced the acquisition of Elite Stockholm and a strategic partnership with Modellink.[46]

In August 2017, Silva International Investments closed a deal to acquire leading media company SportBusiness Group,[47] quickly followed by the acquisition of a majority stake in Globe Soccer in December 2017.[48]

Other business interests

Riccardo Silva has other business interests in technology, fashion and arts, including investments in technology company, Muzik. From December 2017 a gallery at the Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach was re-named the Riccardo and Tatyana Silva Gallery in recognition of the support they have given to the museum and to arts in general[49]. The Bass Museum focusses on exhibitions of international contemporary art, it presents mid-career and established artists reflecting the spirit and international character of Miami Beach. Tatyana sits on the board of directors of the museum.

Personal life

Riccardo Silva is married to Tatyana Silva[50] and they have two sons.
