Sun Mountain is an American manufacturer of golf equipment based in Missoula, Montana. It produces golf carry bags, cart bags, push carts, golf travel bags, and golf rainwear and outerwear. The company pioneered several innovations in golf industry, including lightweight golf bags, foldable push carts, waterproof bags, and moulded top handles.[1]

History

Sun Mountain was founded in Missoula in 1984 by Rick Reimers, a former golf professional from California. His bag designs were the first to use lightweight nylon. Next, he pioneered golf bags with leg stands. The company added its outerwear line in 1990.[2] Sun Mountain was one of the four producers that dominated the American golf bag industry in 1992.[3]

The company created a new line of golf products with the introduction of the first easily foldable push cart, called the Speed Cart, in 1999.[2][4] Sun Mountain was the first golf bag brand to introduce waterproof bags in 2007.[5][6]

In 2010, Sun Mountain was the biggest American maker of golf bags, with its bags accounting for 16.5 percent of the golf bag share sales in the country. It employed 140 people.[2] By 2013, there were 200 employees.[7] The company entered a bag licensing agreement with Under Armour in 2017.[8]

Equipment

The company has prioritized accessibility and ease of use.[9] Its 2Five golf bag weighs only two and a half pounds.[9] The C-130 cart and the 4.5 carry bag have integrated portable power packs to charge mobile devices.[1] Sun Mountain patented a bag carrying system called "Zero-Gravity Technology," which transfers the weight of the bag from the shoulders to the hips.[10]

The company has a ClubGlider golf-club travel case line. The best-known product of the line, the Meridian ClubGlider, is made from ballistic nylon,[11] has two sets of wheels[9] and a unique leg mechanism that extends and retracts,[12] reducing 45 pounds of pressure on the arms and shoulders according to the company.[13]

Recognition

Sun Mountain won three Golf Digest awards for golf equipment in 2016. C-130 won the Best Golf Cart Bag award, the 2Five was awarded best Lightweight Golf Bag, and ClubGlider Meridian received the Best Golf Travel Cover award.[9] In 2017, the company won four awards: 2Five in Lightweight, 3.5LS in Carry, C-130 in Cart, and 5.5LS in Hybrid.[14]

Sun Mountain has been one of the National Golf Foundation's Top 100 Businesses in Golf for years.[15][1]
