Natasha "Tash" Sultana (born 15 June 1995) is an Australian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist,[1] described as a "one-woman band".[2] Her 2016 single "Jungle" was voted into third place in the Triple J Hottest 100, 2016, and Sultana also had 3 songs voted into the Triple J Hottest 100, 2017
Sultana grew up in Melbourne, and has been playing guitar since she was three years old.[1] Her career in music began through busking,[3] and she has been active as a musician on Bandcamp since 2013.[4] Her recordings were viewed millions of times on YouTube in 2016. She was booked on a sold-out world tour in early 2017, and released her first EP on 23 September 2016.
Early life
Australian with half Maltese ancestry, Sultana was born and grew up in Melbourne. She received a guitar from her grandfather when she was three, and has played ever since. She can play over 10 instruments including guitar, bass, trumpet, flute, percussion and saxophone. A self-described drug addict, she developed drug-induced psychosis when she was 17 and had to undergo several months of therapy to recover. Unable to find regular work, she turned to busking on the streets of Melbourne to get by.[3]
Career
Early beginnings
From 2008 to 2012, Sultana was the vocalist of the band Mindpilot with Patrick O'Brien, Emily Daye and David Herbert. This band won several Battles of the Bands competitions in Melbourne. The band split in 2012[5].
2016-present: Notion EP
In 2016, Sultana shared a video of herself performing on social media that garnered one million views within five days.[6] In the same year, she won the J Award for Unearthed Artist of the Year and had two of her tracks voted into the Triple J Hottest 100, 2016: "Jungle" (No. 3) and "Notion" (No. 32). Both are singles from her EP Notion. Sultana performed at the Woodford Folk Festival, Southbound, and St Jerome's Laneway Festival.[7] She is managed by Lemon Tree Music with whom she signed in June 2016.[8]
She uploaded live home recordings on a regular basis and started developing a fanbase. A home recording of the single "Jungle" has gained over 12 million views. Sultana went into the studio with producer Nikita Miltiadou and begun work on her first EP release: Notion. In September 2016, Sultana released the EP through her own independent record label, Lonely Lands Records. The EP reached a peak position of number 4 on the ARIA Australian Albums Chart.[9]
Due to the success of Notion, Sultana announced a world tour, including hundreds of shows in Australia, Europe, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. In order to become Sultana's roadie, her father resigned from his previous job. In April 2017, she released the first single after the release of Notion: "Murder to the Mind" and Sultana worked with Miltiadou to produce the track. It reached the top 20 on the Australian Artist Singles chart.[10] Not long after the release of "Murder to the Mind", Sultana was diagnosed with laryngitis, and was forced to cancel and postpone shows across Australia.[11]
In a June 2017 interview, Sultana told Fairfax that her debut album is slated for release in April 2018, after which she plans to tour, record a second album, tour again, and then take a break and return to normal life.[12] On 25 July 2017, Sultana announced the Homecoming Tour. As part of the tour, Sultana will visit Adelaide (Entertainment Centre), Sydney (Hordern Pavilion), Fremantle (Arts Centre), Margaret River (3 Oceans Winery), Melbourne (Margaret Court Arena) and Noosa (Noosa Sporting Grounds), with support acts the Pierce Brothers and Willow Beats.[13]
In October 2017, Sultana announced the premiere of her new single "Mystik" on triple j.[14] Also in October, Sultana made her television debut on Late Night with Seth Meyers, performing "Jungle".[15] She was nominated for four ARIA Awards: Breakthrough Artist, Best Independent Release (Notion), Best Blues and Roots Album (Notion), Best Australian Live Act (Notion NZ/AUS Tour 2017).[16]
