You guys even allow an article "Back To Babylon" whihc is just an album published by a band to stay in wiki, and you allow a google to be in wiki, I can't see why can't GoodTree, as an oragniazation which helps raise money for charities all over the world, and a free search engine, can't stay in wikipedia. |

Deleted Pages?
I am wondering if it is possible to revert pages that have apparently been deleted. For example, the article Otaku Ninjas did exist at some point but is not there anymore - can we revert to the page that was once there or is it gone for good?

Administrators can delete and undelete pages, but generally only do so when a good reason is provided, keeping in mind deletion policy, including AfD, prod, and criteria for speedy deletion. The deletion log for the article in quesiton may have more information (including a reason for deletion), or you could contact the deleting administrator for comment. You can see the reason for deletion by going to the URL of the page in question, and clicking on the link that says "deletion log". For example, Otaku ninjas has its reason for deletion as 13:08, 10 April 2006 Flowerparty (Talk | contribs) deleted "Otaku ninjas" (deleted per Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Otaku ninjas), and the AfD in question has a little more information. - You can get a PERSONAL copy of a deleted page, for your own userspace (for example, if you think that with some work a deleted article could become acceptable). - While Wikipedia does not contain book reviews as such, there are many, many, articles on individual books, with information about the author, publisher, contents, etc. and links to further information. Why delete one article but not the other
Why is it that the EC0PAVE article page was deleted recently without having a proper opportunity to have it discussed in the same way as Eco-cemet did? Eco-cement article page is absolutely no different to EC0PAVE and if you read carefully one can observe the lack of hostility which is how it should be, so why were they dealt with differently?? Does this mean that Wikipedia follows its own guidelines when it comes to the deletion criteria, or is this a case of bias? - It was deleted by community consensus as spam. It doesn't matter whether you don't like the people who expressed that consensus, or what their opinions were, or why. Wikipedia does not exist to publicise your company. - The request for deletion began by suggesting that the company did not meet the requirements in WP:CORP. These guidelines are created to keep this process fair, so they should guide you and me in deciding which articles are to keep. Are you suggesting that (a) your company does meet these requirements after all? (b) that the other company does not meet those requirements after all? But be sure that any nomination is made by reference to specific Wikipedia policies, because claims of unfairness will, I can assure you, carry less weight than quoting policies. - As for the "new messages" notice, it appears any time your user talk page is edited. - There was no 1939 census, and the 1941 one was called off because of the war; detailed statistical data is understandably hard to come by, because people were somewhat preoccupied at the time.
- However, I have a 1942 source which gives an estimate for mid-1938 of 41,215,000 people in England and Wales and 4,993,000 in Scotland, and a "1937 census" figure for Northern Ireland of 1,280,000. - First, create a new article by the name of Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Hinduism/archive1. Copy everything you wrote on your Featured artilce candidates|Hinduism/archive1 to the new page. Then, add Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Hinduism/archive1 to the vertical box (by clicking the edit link) in Wikipedia:Featured article candidates. Someone has totally deleted our article regarding the Diagonal Lock and has replaced it with a different item, the 2 items are not related and I cannot understand why our item has been deleted. How can we get it back on? or find out who deleted it and why?

- I can't find the article you're referring to. If you know the exact name, you can check the deletion log and enter the exact name you're looking for in the 'Title' field; this will tell you who deleted it and why. For further information, you should contact the admin who deleted it on their User Talk page. --ais523 11:59, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
- Also, it may be that your article was not deleted (removed) as such, but was simply edited to replace the old content with new content. In that case it will not appear in the deletion log. On the current article page, use the "history" link at the top, which will display the entire sequence of edits to the page's content, and you can go through each revision and see where your content was replaced, and why. Internet Explorer will not open wikipedia

- All versions of Internet Explorer are somewhat broken. Microsoft simply refuses to follow W3C standards. Wikipedia is a fairly sophisticated XHTML site; it displays okay in some versions of IE and breaks badly in others. My personal feeling is that it's a waste of time to cater to IE.

- I don't think the problem is IE rendering engine. You should try to compare the connexion settings with Mozilla and IE, if you got both. You can try to delete the cache (Tools - Internet Options). Is Mozilla on the same computer than IE? -- lucasbfr talk 19:16, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
Images not appearing
Please have a look at the Monkton Combe article. I put a picture on this article yesterday, but it shows a red cross in the frame and no picture. If I click on the picture, the enlarged version shows completely normally so I know the picture is on the server. CTRL-F5 makes no difference. Is there a temporary fault on WP? - For some reason the Commons image server isn't generating the thumbnails like it normally does. I suspect it's a temporary problem that will go away soon. You might want to try asking on the Technical Village Pump to see if the contributors there know anything about it. --ais523 15:48, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

Model Forests - a definition
I am writing from the Canadian Forest Service to enquire how to go about putting in a definition of "Model Forests" (an Canadian concept that has been widely used internationally for over 15 years). Do I put this in as a news article, or is there another section for a definition of terms?

- You have a username already, so you can just start by clicking on Model Forest and editing it. However, be careful about some things:
- Only add the entry to Wikipedia if there is something encyclopedic that can be said about the subject. For instance, a discussion of what the phrase means internationally and something about the history would be much better than just a definition. If you can't write very much on the page, write {{stub}} at the bottom to signify that the article is shorter than ideal. If you only have a definition, it may be worth mentioning in a pre-existing article instead.
- Make sure that you don't have a conflict of interest in writing the article; make sure you write neutrally. (Many users from companies and organisations end up advertising, sometimes deliberately, sometimes by mistake, and this isn't allowed.)
- If you're not sure, you can make the page as a draft at User:Model Forest/Model Forest, and then post back here to ask whether the article will be acceptable. --ais523 17:18, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
Easily accessible election year information
When is wikipedia going to create a site listing all the candidates for election years with link to each of their own pages? I think this would allow people to more easily find information on their candidates so they can make the right decision. Also it would be nice if wikipedia could provide information on what bills candidates have proposed and votes for/against.

I am submiting an article which relates to a military organisation which I served with for some considerable time. However, I see to be falling foul of an inability to produce a reference point (either in a book or on the web) to verify the content. A citation is required on much of the text but I am producing the piece on my first hand.
Can you assist in my plight???

- This is a serious problem. If the facts in an article cannot be verified, they must be removed from the article. (For example, even if Bill Gates edited the article about Microsoft, the facts have to be verifiable, for example, a newspaper report.). First hand knowledge, which cannot be verified, must not be used. The idea is that Wikipedia is a collection of references to information: not the information itself, just a summary of what the sources say. No source = no information. Take a look at Wikipedia:Verifiability to see if there is anything in there that you might be able to draw on and rescue your article. Let's hope so. Notinasnaid 20:23, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
Thumbnail doesn't show
I was browsing the page Visibility and noticed that the image Image:Fog&Sunny.png doesn't show on that page, or the page about that image, or on some of the pages that I checked that used this image. I saw this with both FireFox and IE. Other PNG images seem fine. I played with it some, and it seems that I can see the image at thumb sizes other than 380px. How can I fix that? Depends on the browser. A google search or search on Microsoft's site should get you language packs for Internet Explorer. Often these work as well with Firefox. Wooty 01:31, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
Too many References?

- Controvertial articles are, inevitably, those over which people will argue every point. So whereas an article about a Friends episode might only have one or two references, something like the article you mention will, ideally, have many. Even if a reference is truly redundant, folks will argue that some sources are poor, and that multiple sources corroborate disputed points. That said, every reference has to be from a quality, reliable source. One tactic some mal-users take (I'm not referring to this specific article, as I've not studied it) is to put in lots of references, but when you look at them in detail they're not all from reliable sources (but instead from fringe groups, blogs, and partisan sources). For a controvertial article I'd recommend discussing any proposed reference-cleanup on the talk page first. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 20:08, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

- Wikipedia is not a gallery, and it's certainly not a gallery of copyrighted images (as screenshots of games are).
- As for Burlington, assuming it's a town then it would probably merit an article - most real towns etc. are considered notable. If your father's site has content on Burlington that would be of interest to readers, then you can add it as an external link. It's difficult to be more specific without knowing the nature of the article - there are quite a lot of places called Burlington, as that page shows, so I don't know what you mean - and without knowing what the website contains. Breakdown of Ref function by Gallery
Recently the <Gallery> function breaks down the Reference output of the function <Ref>, as in articles Indo-Greek kingdom or Hasekura Tsunenaga. Basically, every reference before the Gallery is dropped, but every reference after appears. Signing my name
When I am editing and I type four '~'s, my name shows up, but it's not linked to my page. Are the 4 '~'s supposed to generate the brackets, User: and duplicate copies of my name, or only one copy of my name and the date and time? MathMan64 22:02, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
- In "My preferences", the first tab, there is a check box "Raw signature". If it isn't checked, it provides the link automatically. If it is, it inserts exactly what you have typed in the "signature" box (plus timestamp). In your case, you have checked the box but did not write the link manually. Welcoming Newbies
I will often welcome Anons to WIKI; usually I do such by posting Welcome with in {{ }}. I recently say a much better tool using, "Welcomeg" within {{ }}; however, there are places for inserting the Anon's handle, etc. Is there somewhere I can go to learn how best to use this tool? - Ahh, you're talking about templates. Template:Welcome and Template:Welcomeg to be exact. You can see most all of them in Category:Welcome templates. They can be slightly confusing at first. Basically, putting something simple into the braces points at the template area. So {{Welcome}} points to Template:Welcome. If Template:Welcome didn't exist, I believe it'd show you the contents of Welcome (the article). Another cool trick is to substitute templates. Use {{subst:welcome}} and when you save it, wikipedia will copy the contents, more or less, of the template into the page you're writing. The next person to edit the page will see all the wikitext. For newbies, it helps a lot to see the text rather than templates. They can also have parameters. Look at Template:Welcome-m The template is designed so that the message you put after the | but before the }} will take the place of the {{{1}}}. The template's page advocates using {{subst:welcome-m|<i>message</i>}} ~~~~. message would appear if you did that, plus it will substitute. Our citation templates, like Template:cite book also use parameters which are named, like title and author, but they are kind of complicated to explain their internal mechanics. Hey! I would like to link a preedited thumbnail on the page (not using the [[Image:image.png|thumb]] function but putting straight in [[Image:thumb.png|frame]]), and this thumb would link to the full picture description within the wiki.

- As far as I know, this isn't possible without some CSS trickery (ie. template:click). You should not use this template in the articles, as the hack breaks accessibility and doesn't work in all browsers. This functionality isn't built-in as it's just a generally accepted convention that the image you see is what you'll get when you click on it. You could always put a note in the thumbnail's page pointing to the other image if you absolutely have to. I'm not sure if that's allowed for fairuse images, though you shouldn't be modifying those anyways. -- Consumed Crustacean (talk) 23:01, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

"The Milne School" article has been placed in the "northeastern U.S. institution of higher education" category, which is incorrect. The Milne School was a secondary school -- junior and senior high school -- and should be moved to a more appropriate category (perhaps "Northeastern U.S. Secondary Schools" or "Northeastern U.S. High Schools." It was located in Albany, New York, if that makes a difference.

Can I replace IP with username?
Hello Wikipedia Help desk person,
Today I edited both the talk page and the article for Eumetazoa before realizing I wasn't logged in. Now the page history lists those edits with my IP number rather than my username. Is there any way to assign my username to those edits so people can direct their comments to me?

- In this particular case, the template involved is {{Infobox NFL player}}, and we're in luck, because it does have a caption, but for some reason the caption isn't included by default. You can just add
|caption=Foo
into the template, as though it were any of the other lines of text. If you need any help, just let me know, and I can show you what I mean (tricky to put it into words, so it may just be better to show by example). In situations where there isn't an optional/secret caption available... well, I guess you're stuck. Best I could think of then would be to edit the infobox template and add a caption. New ID due to cyberstalker, not trying to sockpuppet
I've created a new ID because someone who has been cyberstalking me tracked me to Wikipedia and was trying to initiate contact. It will be awhile before I'm really active at Wiki again. But when I do start writing here again, I'm concerned about being accused of trying to sockpuppet, when I'm just doing this for my own safety.

- It's not sockpuppetry, strictly speaking, as long as you aren't using both IDs at the same time. As long as you aren't trying to use both, you should be fine. You could always contact a trusted admin off-wiki and let them know the scoop, so they can advocate for you should the need arise. But it won't, as long as you don't try to use both IDs. Edited article now appears to have lost all content after first paragraph
I edited an article to add some references and make minor corrections. Now when I visit the article all that appears is the first paragraph. The rest is absent, though it still appears in the "history" versions. The article is Naftali Herz Tur-Sinai.

Citing a Photo Gallery with no photos
I was looking to add some cites to San Bernardino train disaster. Actually I intend to greatly expand it in the future, but for now I'll add the cites, and someday later I'll read those cites and then update the text.
So anyway, I came up with a dilemma. There's a site called TrainWeb that hosts train websites. They don't produce content, they just give webspace to various railroad hobbyists. Putting that name in the cite would as useful as saying Geocities. So I want to cite the hobbyist who put up the page. If the home page said Kern Junction Railroad Club, I would just say that, and be done with it. However, the actual name is Kern Junction Railroad Photo Gallery. This site has pictures of a memorial at the Tehachapi Loop, along with text explaining the incident. It's very meaty piece of text, apparently written by someone with direct contacts. I certainly want to cite this site, but if someone sees "Photo Gallery" and clicks it expecting to see train wreck photos, they'll be sadly disappointed. So I added "Note: No relevant photos at this site." The problem is this is calling the memorial irrelevant. So I'm insensitive. I invite anyone to make it better (but don't delete these two cites I dug up).
- Rather than have to add "no relevant photos", I'd just say move the link to an "External links" section, along with the previous (Graham) one -- they belong there rather than in References -- and use something like "The Cross at the Loop by Kevin Stevens at TrainWeb" as the link text. It does not have to be the full official name of the page; we often use summarized link texts in the "External links" sections, like "Official site" or "[name of movie] at IMDB" or similar. --MCB 23:55, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

Hi A while ago i followed the instructions on inserting the necessary code to put the "Kate" edit counter link amongst the links on the top right corner of my Wikipedia screen (with the "my preferences", "my watch list" "Log out" links etc). Kate seems to be defunct these days and I can't now find the instructions I used to include it. Any idea how I would go about removing it? - People can create their own accounts, they don't have to be given out. (Any user can create an account for any person, but there isn't much point as the person can normally just create one themselves.) You can edit Wikipedia without an account, but there are many advantages to creating an account; accounts are free and require no information beyond a username of your choice and a password (you can also give an email address if you want). Please excuse my rambling. The questions and situation are complex, but the article additions I would like to make will be concise and informative. I would appreciate advise on how to deal with the follwing situation:
I am the unauthorized biographer of a late great World Famous Man who shall remain nameless, with whom I spent fifteen years in common law bigamy after he had gotten a common law divorce by virtue of having not lived with his wife for eleven years at the time of our first involvement. There was nothing scandalous about our involvement, except for a large age difference,since no one was deceived and everyone knew about the relationship.
There is a rather long Wikipedia article about him with which I have no factual quarrel except that it is extremely dry and apart from one almost correct quote it does not in any way capture the real spirit of what this guy was about or why he was famous, which had more to do with his wit and philanthropy than it did with his professional eminence. I cannot put an entire biography into Wikipedia, but I would like to jazz up the article with a couple of anectdotes from his actual life. I have no idea who wrote this article, I don't know how to find out and I am only newly computer literate myself.
I am an UNauthorized biographer because when he fell ill his legal family stole him from my while he was partly non compus mentus and unable to respond properly and furthermore would not even give me access to his comatose body to say goodbye. I am not nearly so bitter as to mention this sort of personal crap in a Wiki article. In fact I am not even going to mention our relationship or my existence in the Wiki article at all, since it is more or less irrelevent to the wit and philanthropy mentioned above---although I can't really leave a fifteen year mostly cohabitation out of the actual biography (as opposed to a Wiki article). I don't plan to put the bitter crap into the biography either, although I do kick myself for not insisting he get a divorce and also have become a serious advocate of gay marriage over the whole thing. In any case, his legal family did explicitly state that they did not want me writing anything at all about him and have done everything they could to interfere with my research including telling people in remote parts of the country that I deluded the entire relationship.
The theory that I deluded the whole fifteen years is highly unlikely since he left a one page will in our County Courthouse and this document has four names on it. Three of the people so named are related to the deceased by blood or marriage and the other is myself. Therefore, it is reasonable to conclude that not only am I not delusional, but I am one of four experts in the entire world on the life of this man. Furthermore, two of the experts are approaching ninety and in failing health and the other has, as I suspect, very dry writing skills and no desire to immortalize his amazing Father properly---so I am not sure who they think is going to write this book if not I?
I don't know anything at all about adding to a Wiki article or if I could do so anonymously. I would like some advice as to how to handle such a situation in Wiki, since I think writing two or three short paragraphs here might help me in later battlefields of this sort. How may I find out who wrote the article? May I add to it anonymously? How do I add to an article in the first place? If I have to put my name on it, what should I do if my content is challenged for the simple reason that it has my name on it and his family does not wish to have my name associated with his? Although the email address below identifies me, I'll create an account that doesn't when I identify him. Can you give me some instruction or forward this to someone who can?

- Everything in a Wikipedia article must be Wikipedia:Verifiability. It's a simple rule, and means that personal knowledge cannot be included in an article unless it is backed up by a reliable source. (This would mean, for example, that if Bill Gates came and added a vital fact to the Microsoft article, it could not stay unless it was published somewhere else first). An unpublished book cannot be a source. Once a book is published it can be referred to, though if there is controversy it is important to maintain a neutral point of view by not favouring one side of the controversy over another. - Wikipedia can be searched through Special:Search (try a search term and check the URL of the results page if you want to link automatically), or via external search engines. There are various APIs provided to link to things on Wikipedia, but the search feature isn't very advanced. Wikimedia Meta-Wiki contains various technical information about this sort of thing; it may be useful to search that wiki to see if there is a solution to your problem there. --ais523 12:08, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

Issue with an article
Dear Wikipedia staff,
I love your website! Its easily one of the best information-based site on the internet today. I come here for the majority of my inquiries regarding a wide range of interests. Wikipedia has never let me down.
This being said...
I have an issue with an External Link being provided under the article titled "New Thought". One of the first External Links provided by this article is entitled "What is New Thought?". When you open this weblink you are immediately taken to a Christian-based website that is denouncing "cults".
I find this highly unusual. Yes, the New Thought movement is based on some of the Christian tenants and yes, the bible is used as a reference. However, why would a cult-bashing website be the one suggested to explain about the "New Thought" movement and line of thinking? To me, at least, allowing this weblink to exist removes the impartiality of Wikipedia regarding this issue and makes it a hotbed for religious and philosophical tension.
Is there a way to petition to have this website removed as the External Link for this article? I find that the website is mis-leading and could potentially turn away people who are making a genuine effort to better themselves spiritually and mentally.
That's about it. I dont have anything else to complain about and I'm loath to actually complain about this. However, some things just need to be said, right?

- Thank you for raising this. It does seem that the article doesn't follow the Wikipedia outlines for external links. Where there is a controversy, Wikipedia should indicate which side the links are on. - Shaun, I think your best course of action is to raise this issue on the talk page for New Thought. Click on the + sign at the top of the page to add a new topic, then give your topic a name and explain your concerns. Don't forget to sign your post as explained on the edit page (below the edit box, under the heading "Your changes will be visible immediately"). Personally, I think the simplest solution would be to label that link something like this: "Criticism of New Thought from a traditional Christian perspective." Wikilinks for nationality?
(Copied from WP:VPA, where I haven't gotten any responses yet.) I've been fixing dab links for Swedish and Norwegian. After some initial hesitation, I have settled on using piped links to Sweden and Norway respectively when the adjectives refer to nationality; this is because Swedish people and Norwegian people explicitly treat ethnic Swedes and Norwegians -- someone who is from Sweden or Norway, or who lives there, may or may not be ethnically Swedish or Norwegian (example). I've been challenged on this in at least one case, and now I'm wondering whether there are any WP guidelines on this. (Just looked in the MoS and didn't find anything.) When I print any Wikipedia page out it comes out different to how it is on screen. Would I be able to, say, order the pages direct from Wikimedia as they are on screen?
- Wikipedia pages come out slightly differently on different people's computers, especially if they're using different skins. You can use the 'printable version' link in the toolbox at the left of the page to get a version suitable for printing; if you really need the page exactly as shown (with the toolboxes, tabs, and userspace links) you can take screenshots (PrtSc in Windows copies a screenshot to the Clipboard) and print those. --ais523 14:00, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

- The sandbox is designed for new users to try out editing Wikipedia documents. Whenever you go there, you may find whatever is left over from the previous person who tried it, though editors try to clean it out periodically. It often has total nonsense of one sort or another. Change of Photograph for the Gerald Mohr page
Hi! I would like to submit a better photograph of Gerald Mohr than is currently displayed on his website. The photograph is my property and was a publicity photo from circa 1954. I have another photo, which I prefer, which is circa 1967, but I do not have specific ownership of it, though it was obtained from the web. In my opinion, the photo currently displayed on his website more resembles the actor Pernell Roberts than Mr Mohr, so I would like to submit either one of these close-up black and white photos in its place. Grateful for your advice in doing so. Incidentally, it is my Appreciation website which is linked to his page.

Should I remove articles from list after copyediting?
Being new, I figured one way to be helpful would be to copyedit pages on Wikipedia:Translation_into_English#Recently_completed_translations since english is my native language. However, I have been removing links to the articles that need checking as I edit them. It looks like some of them have been checked already but left on the page. Which is correct? Internal Link to article query
How many times should the same article be linked within another article?

- I think the usual advice is not more than once per section. What I think we're trying to avoid is having articles that link the same thing overandoverandoverandover, so to speak. It's kind of a balancing act between being useful to the reader (who may need the links) and not irritating the reader (by having too many links in the article). --Tkynerd 23:17, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

- Under Wikipedia's privacy policy, such information is generally kept private unless they choose to reveal it of their own accord, or in cases of abuse, in which case you could file a request for checkuser (but even then, the IP generally isn't released). Because it seems to me absolutely nothing has changed between the versions.

- Usually that means somebody added a space. In this case, between "Thunder Fist (Thor Hammer):" and "Launches a powerful..." -- can be a bit tricky to find them, though. Can be useful to know, if you ever want to make a null edit. Luna Santin 03:11, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

- FWIW, if, as I, you're not enamored of IRC, where server problems/outages are often reported with celerity, and wonder whether a problem is local, this status page can prove useful; Alterante, for example, has noted there that image uploading, as one might expect, is also spotty at the moment. - Well, it's not your site, but if you mean you want to change the name of the article on your school, go to the article and click on the "move" tab at the top of the screen. Random info on a location
Having read the article Barton-le-Clay i am wondering if a list of shops, churhces, bus-stops and takeaways is really the right sort of info to be listed on Wikipedia. I dont want to just delete it without a view. What do others think?

- This type of listing is certainly not what WP can accept. I've been contributing to WP since January 2003 and have seen many thousands of articles and I have never seen anything as strange as this entry. We can't accept this sort of listing for 2 reasons - we are not a Trade Directory and such information can change too rapidly. Will it always be kept up to date when, perhaps, the contributor moves away from WP? So the format should be radically changed even if deletions are needed. I think the contributors only had to look at a dozen or so other town entries then they would have realised that their format was not the norm. - Adrian Pingstone 08:24, 20 October 2006 (UTC)
- To make sure I was on firm ground, when I said the Barton entry was unusual, I took a few towns at random from an atlas of the UK and looked up their WP entries to have a look at the style. I only rejected a town if its population was above 10,000 (population follows the name). So have a look at Settle 2420, Cullompton 8000, Carnforth 5500, Kirkby 2500, Ellesmere, Shropshire, Stamford Bridge 3394 and Malton 4000. Not one looks remotely like the Barton entry. So the house-style is clear – no super detailed listings of every shop. It’s a shame someone put so much work into these lists but they only had to view a few entries to see the style. nested formatting
Hi, I want to get a <pre> block inside a numbered list, to get something like that:

some preformatted and multiline text

but without having the numbering interrupted (and, hopefully, indented nicely). I tried several approaches, some of them work only in certain browsers, and others work only in certain (old) versions of MediaWiki. Any help of how this should be done properly is greatly appreciated.
I can show you what I tried to use and where it worked in detail, if you ask me to.

- From what I've seen on the wikitech-l mailing list, there's an extension that tries to correct mismatched HTML tags, etc., produced from the wikimarkup, which can have some strange interactions with mismatched tags. What do you think about this?

Commercial Advertising
On the page RSPCA Australia a link was created to a commercial website. This has a tenuous link to the RSPCA as it seems to be some sort of gift shop. My first instinct is to remove the link. - Generally speaking, leave links in if either they are notable in connection with the article's subject (e.g. http://www.wikipedia.org in Wikipedia, as it's the homepage) or if the information at the other end is the sort of information the article gives (possibly in more detail). The right to upload a photo
Ok, I saw a photograph that I would like to upload for use on one of Wikipedia's pages. It was on a site dedicated to tram systems, and the photo in question was of a tram that runs in public in Zürich, Switzerland. I wrote to the webmaster, and he wrote back that the photo is his, he is happy for me to use it, and is even willing to send me a higher resolution version of the same picture.
Can I use it, and how should it be classified (fair use, for example)? If his say-so is insufficient to be considered lisence to use it, what further steps do I need to take?
I have already searched Wikipedia for a soln to this problem, but can't find one. Please help me.
By the way, would you recommend me accepting a higher resolution photo from the owner? Although photos on Wikipedia pages are not normally very large, they are often clickable, and link to a higher res image. What would be the recommended way to go here?

Errm, I don't know what constitutes a 'suitable licence' Notinasnaid. The guy who owns the photo told me, I quote,"Die Rechte an den Fotos aus Zürich gehören mir. Wenn ich als Autor der Bilder genannt werde, stelle ich Ihnen gerne Bilder fuer Wikipedia zur Verfügung. Falls Sie die Bilder in einer besseren Auföesung benoetigen, kann ich Sie Ihnen auch mit maximal 1840*1232 Pixeln zur Verfuegung stellen."
Which translates to, "The rights of the photos from Zürich belong to me. If I am credited as the 'author' of the photo, then I would be happy to make them available for Wikipedia. If you want a higher resolution photo, I can supply one up to a maximum of 1840*1232 pixels."
Does that satisfy Wikipedia's requirements or not? Where would I credit him (directly under the photograph?) And would it be as 'fair use' or something else? What about the higher resolution offer - need I take it? (current image is 500*506 pixels) Pheasantplucker 19:02, 19 October 2006 (UTC)
- Doesn't qualify yet. Images need to be released with a free license to anyone, allowing use in Wikipedia alone is not free enough. How should he go about doing that? Please explain the steps he has to take to release such a licence. I have a nasty suspicion I'm not going to get him to do it, simply because it's too much bother on his part - not that he's against Wikipedia actually using it (so long as he's credited). It all seems so protracted - I wonder if it would be simpler getting hold of a camera and going to Zürich myself for the day and take the picture myself. Problems logging in using my PC
I hope someone can help me in this. Lately, I am experiencing problems logging into Wikipedia from my PC. I am using a web browser called Crazy Browser and my PC is a Pentium II. For the past 10 months, I have not faced any problems. Allow me to explain these problems in detail. Firstly, when I click the Main Page of this project, the images of this page appear incorrectly. There seem to be a overlapping of these images. Secondly, when I try to log in, the special page, Sign-in gives me a blank page and only shows me the navigation toolbar at the left-hand corner. This problem has been going on for the past two days. I have checked my PC for viruses and spyware and so far, my PC remains clean. When I try logging into this project by using a different PC from a different location, the problem ceases. Has anyone experienced similiar problems as well? I hope that someone can help me soon! - Well, you can just edit your user page like any other, and click Edit on any page (without saving) to see how it is done. But don't be misled by some of the user pages you see: you don't have to spend any time doing that if you don't want to. how can I request a non existant article name to be redirected to an existing article
Greetings to Everyone!
As the headline shows, my question is that:
what to do if I'm sure that an already existing article has a name(that is used in the literature and articles) what the search engine can't find, and so it is unknown for the system. How can I request for a name to be inserted to the serach system and to be redirected to the appropriate site? Or can I post such a request to somewhere or is this even possible anyhow?
Namely the cumulant generating function (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cumulant_generating_function) has a name in the engeneering literature like "log-moment generating function" or "logarithmic moment generating function" etc. But as I wrote the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cumulant_generating_function is redirected to the Cumulant article in the wikipedia, but the other two is unknown for the search engine.

Determining IP Address of User
I would like to know if there is a way of determining the IP address of a Wikipedia member, namely of Therlaender, who vandalized the article of the school I am at, and simultaneously insulted another member of Wikipedia, Pegship. What was written by the vandal directly indicates that he/she is a student at the school, and I would like to know whether I can track his/her IP so that appropriate punishment might possibly be dealt with (in the real world). - No, you cannot find the IP of a user. Only a very limited number of admins (CheckUsers) may do so, and under very specific and limited circumstances. This kind of situation would not remotely qualify. Fan-1967 03:12, 20 October 2006 (UTC)

Gregorian Calendar vs. Julian Calendar
Does Wikipedia adjust older historical events for the presently used Gregorian calendar, or do you leave the Julian calendar date as the published date?
The evolution to the current calendar takes many twists and turns and some people still do not adhere to this standard yet.
I need your answer to stay accurate when quoting dates of events such as the Kepler Nova, etc.

Editing
I really could not find anything about this, but what stops anyone from coming in and erasing everything if anyone can edit these pages. Also, how can any of this be credible if anyone can change it? Couldn't people give wrong information?
- Well, most high-traffic pages are watched by hundreds if not thousands of people, so chances are any vandalism (which is what we call it when someone goes in and blanks pages or adds nonsense) will be reverted fairly quickly, sometimes within seconds and usually in less than an hour. It's possible for wrong information; as with any wiki, things should be taken with a grain of salt. However, there are thousands of people working to make this into a workable encyclopedia, and by policy information does need to be verifiable and all that, so it's actually a lot more reliable than most people think. If you feel the need, sources are usually given at the bottom of the article, which you can reference if you're unsure. Of course, if you see something wrong, go ahead and fix it! - Regular edits can only blank pages. To actually delete them, you need to be an administrator. Most people won't put in the good edits and effort it requires to become an administrator to abuse those abilities. That's a bad idea anyway. Block links from being added to Wikipedia
I've been fighting a slowly losing battle with an anonymous user who keeps adding linkspam to a number of porn star articles... to date he's added links to sites he controls for 208 different porn stars, and he's persistent about it too. I know Wikipedia has a list of URLs you can't add to a page. How do I go about getting a list of the linkspam sites added to that blacklist?? Tabercil 12:17, 20 October 2006 (UTC)

Possible PD Image infringement
Hi! Could you take a look at this image Image:Castle hill.jpg. I'm pretty sure that I have seen the image before, on another website, and that it is copyrighted. It has been uploaded and used to replace the Image:Victoria Tower Castle Hill(RLH).jpg that I took and originally put there, though without any source info. I'm not bothered about my image being replaced by another, but having taken as many photo's as I have of the tower, and lived just below it for many years, there is something about it that is not right. I suspect that the sky has been possibly added in digitally to change the look of the original image. Richard Harvey 17:30, 20 October 2006 (UTC)
- I see that the user who uploaded it has uploaded a number of other images that appear to be either professional photographs or possibly digitally altered images, but did not state the origin of any of them, merely that they were under a Creative Commons license (cc-by-sa 1.0), followed by a confusing phrase, "according to which the image comes in the definition of PD". I will ask the user on his/her Talk page to clarify the origin and license of the images, and follow up with appropriate tags if necessary. Notability guidelines for historical events
I've read over the Wikipedia notability guidelines and I don't see anything that specifically addresses notability guidelines for historical events. I'm wondering whether there is a policy and if not whether there should be one.
My main interest in this is the history of aviation. If we had articles for every single aircraft accident ever we'd be drowning in accident reports, but what connotes notability? I'd like to propose guidelines for including air accidents in Wikipedia but without general historical event guidelines it seems like proposing them is putting the cart before the horse.

- If you can find third-party sources asserting that the event was notable, it is. I don't know if that's the official guideline on the matter, but I think you're generally safe if you can find a source. I would go ahead and write the article - from first glance it seems plausible. If it's going to be deleted, it would probably be under a full AfD since it's not a clear-cut case, so you can definitely see whether community consensus is okay with it. - The accidents I'm planning to put in are notable in that they've been referred to as notable by third parties (although most of the references are paper, not online) *and* in that they're notable for some other reason (they prompted changes to government rules, highlighted problems with aircraft design, etc.). I added |one accident yesterday that addressed flight and controller training in Asia.
- I'm more concerned that somebody is going to decide one day that every accident in the NTSB, TSB of Canada, AAIB (UK), etc. databases has to go into Wikipedia. That's something like 20 accidents and incidents a *day* worldwide over the last 80 years. We have an article on the very notable hockey player Bill Barilko, for instance; we don't need a separate article on the routine accident (if that can be said) that took his life. It would be nice to have guidelines, especially in the case of accidents in developing nations or before 1950 where despite the accident being notable there isn't much online. Sometimes it seems like we have 20 KB on an accident that cost two lives in the US but nothing on an accident that cost 300 lives in India and prompted massive changes to Indian air traffic control procedures.

- You may want to take a look at Wikipedia's policies on biographic articles. Chances are, your article's topic was not considered notable enough to warrant an article. Getting killed by a drunk driver is not a notability in of itself; unless you can find third-party sources verifying the notability of the subject, it is unlikely to fly here. Sorry! - Please be polite: rudeness will not help you. You're confusing the difference between an individual editor's talk page and an article. And yes, if somebody's not notable (and there are strict and specific guidelines that state what "notable" means, and they apply to everyone), any Wikipedia article on the person will be deleted. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not Myspace. If information is not usable, why would it be here?
- Also, has it occurred to you that your friend's family might not approve of having her personal information on a widely read website like Wikipedia? Help! I had a perfectly good template at Template:Nth weekday of month but when I tried moving it to Template:Nth weekday in month it broke. All I wanted to do was change "of" to "in".
I tried moving it back, but it's still broken.

- You can restrict Wikipedia's search by namespace (search first for something that isn't found, like sdfsdfsdfsdfsdf), then on the search form you can search only user pages for whatever you'd like. I have searched Wikipedia, there is no article about the Search engine "GoodTree" which helps to raise money for charities all over the world. So I created one, but only after 5 minutes, someone deleted it and I have not even have a chance to save it yet. - There's no article in the the logs by that name, but you can look for yourself at Special:Log, which should have the deleting admin's reasoning. It was more than likely because it violated the criteria for speedy deletion, probably G11 or A7. -- Consumed Crustacean (talk)

My access to Wikipedia is through AOL. I have been accused of vandalizing articles, because some one else also using the AOL number, has been doing that. - AOL users switch proxy IPs quickly. You were most likely warned because a vandal was using the IP before you. The only remedy is to switch to another ISP, otherwise you just have to be prepared for it due to the odd way AOL works. -- Consumed Crustacean (talk) 01:58, 21 October 2006 (UTC)
