The Ministry of Law and Order and Southern Development (Sinhala: නීතිය හා සාමය සහ දක්ෂිණ සංවර්ධන අමාත්යාංශය Neethiya hā Sāmaya saha Dakshina Sangwardhana Amathyanshaya; Tamil: சட்டமும் ஒழுங்கும் மற்றும் தெற்கு அபிவிருத்தி அமைச்சு) is a cabinet ministry of the Government of Sri Lanka responsible for law and order. The ministry is responsible for formulating and implementing national policy on law and order and other subjects which come under its purview..[1] The ministry manages the country's police. The ministry is not responsible for migration and prisons - these come under the purview of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Wayamba Development and Cultural Affairs and Ministry of Prison Reforms, Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs respectively. The current Minister of Law and Order and Southern Development is Sagala Ratnayaka [2] The ministry's secretary is Jagath Wijeweera.[3]
History
Since independence in 1948 the Sri Lankan police had come under the Ministry of Defence. The Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission had recommended that policing be transferred to a separate ministry.[4][5] The Ministry of Law and Order was established on 16 August 2013 to manage policing in the country.[6][7][8]
