Fruit soju (Template:Lang-ko) is a flavored soju, an alcoholic drink originally from Korea. In 2015, Sunhari, the first fruit-flavored soju brand was released by beverage manufacturer Lotte Chilsung.[citation needed]

The phrase fruit soju is a combination of Korean words gwail (fruit) and soju (a type of Korean alcohol).

History

Before the first fruit soju was released, standard soju was quite popular in Korea as an alcoholic drink for adults. However, some people found soju difficult to drink due to its high alcohol content and strong flavor (16.8‒53%). Its popularity declined because of Korean societal changes regarding work. This resulted in people not having enough time to drink.[1]

In 2015, the first fruit soju 'Sunhari' was released. It had a citron flavoring and lower alcohol content. This was popular with young people, due to its sweeter taste and lower alcoholic content compared to standard soju.[2]

After Sunhari had become popular in the soju market, other companies released their own fruit soju. Joenday released three kinds of the beverage. While Chamisle released Jamongisle, a grapefruit flavoured soju that became as popular as Sunhari. Sunhari still had the strong taste of original soju, whereas Jamongisle had a sweeter and milder taste.[3]

The popularity of fruit soju continued for a year after the release of Sunhari. In March 2016, however, the sales decreased as the hype that first surrounded fruit soju in 2015 disappeared. Today, fruit soju is not consumed much anymore, and consequently, this type of soju is no longer widely sold.[4][5] Currently, sparkling soju is preferred over all other types of this beverage.[6]

Many of Korea's fruit soju has also been released in the United States, such as "Dew on Jamong (자몽에 이슬)" and "Sunhari". Lotte Chilsung released "Sunhari (순하리)" in LA and Colorado, USA. The company exported 9,600 boxes of Sunhari to the USA in February 2016 and 150,000 boxes in March 2016, with each box containing twenty bottles of fruit soju. A Korean company located in Ohio has made three flavours of fruit soju.[7]

Characteristics

블루베리 좋은데이
석류 좋은데이
자몽에 이슬

Fruit soju has a distinct fruit flavor and lower alcohol content (degree) compared to standard soju. The beverage comes in many flavors, such as blueberry, grapefruit, lemon and apple.

Special limited editions of fruit soju have been made, such as C1 Lime soju from the alcohol company "Daesun Jujo (대선주조)". 9,000 bottles were released.[8]

Fruit soju contains large amounts of sugar, with each bottle containing 32.4 grams (1.14 oz). The calorie content of each bottle of fruit soju totals 400 kcal. This is more than one bowl of rice. It contains 5 g (0.18 oz) more sugar than Coke. This has contributed to obesity and an increase of visceral fat.[9]

The most popular fruit soju for university students is "Dew on Grapefruit (자몽에 이슬)". Praise for "Dew on Grapefruit" includes "the other fruit soju is too sweet" and the "combination of grapefruit and soju is good". The second-most popular fruit soju in this demographic is "Bokbadeun Brother (복받은 부라더)".[10]
