Utthayan Avenue or Utthayan Road (Template:Lang-th), or popularly known as Aksa Avenue (ถนนอักษะ; lit: Axis road) is a short road in Bangkok. It's a road in the style of avenue in Thawi Watthana sub-district, Thawi Watthana district, suburban Bangkok in the area adjacent to Tambon Salaya, Amphoe Phutthamonthon, Nakhon Pathom province's Phutthamonthon.
This avenue has a distance of 3.98 km (around 2.4 mi), width 90 m, with beautiful scenery. The distinctive feature is the two-sided hong (หงส์; swan) lampposts of 979 and 18-m-wide lotus ditch as the traffic island with three level fountains to be named as the most beautiful roads in Thailand. It serves as a link between Phuttamonthon Sai 3 and Phutthamonthon Sai 4 roads.
It was created as part of the Phutthamonthon project during the era of the Field Marshal Plaek Pibulsongkram since 1957 to commemorate the 2500th anniversary of Buddhism. But the project has been running for a long time until it was completed and officially opened on February 27, 1999.
The name of the avenue is familiar to "Aksa" (Axis) as a memorial to Thailand to join the Second World War as Axis powers (Aksa in Thai means "core").[1]
With the beauty of the avenue, it's often used as a place to take photos especially during the night. And also used as a place to splash water during Songkran Festival like other places of Bangkok such as Khaosan or Rambuttri roads within Bang Lamphu neighbourhood etc.
Moreover, during April to May 2014, it was used as a gathering place for the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) or red shirts. This event ended at the coup of National Council for Peace and Order (NCPD) on May 22 the same year.[2][3] [4]
