Harley Francis Flanagan (born March 8, 1967) is a musician, writer and Renzo Gracie Brazilian JiuJitsu practitioner and one of the founders of New York Hardcore. He is the founder of the highly influential New York Hardcore band Cro-Mags.
At age 12, Flanagan was the drummer for the New York Punk band The Stimulators. When he was nine years old, Flanagan published a book of poetry and drawings written when he was seven years old, with a foreword written by family friend Allen Ginsberg.[1]
Current projects
Flanagan's autobiography, Hard-Core: Life of My Own, published by Feral House in 2016 and edited by Laura Lee Flanagan, contains an introduction by Steven Blush. Since publication, the book spent over 6 months as the #1 seller in martial arts biographies on Amazon.[2][3]
Receiving wider public recognition for the influence of his music as well as the legendary life he has lead, in recent years Flanagan was profiled in the New York Times, Rolling Stone in 2016 and then again in 2018 and Vice. He was also featured in an exclusive interview by friend and fan Anthony Bourdain, who wrote the cover blurb for Flanagan's 2016 autobiography.
On May 19, 2018, Harley, performing as Harley Flannagan Hard Core, was one of four classic punk/hardcore acts to play the sold out Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, along with Murphy's Law, Suicidal Tendencies, and The Original Misfits, in the latter band's first show in their home state in 35 years.[4]
In 2018 Harley released three major recordings: First, in spring 2018. The Dr. Know EP, proceeds of which benefit the titular Bad Brains member, who has medical expenses; Second, on July 6, 2018 The Original Cro-Mags Demos, 1982/83, which documents Harley's work writing the songs, playing all instruments and singing early versions of the sgons that are blueprint for the Cro-Mags sound;[5] and third, The Stimulator's iconic "Loud Fast Rules" (1979) is due out in mid-August 2018 featuring re-releases of "Loud Fast Rules," "Run Run Run" and the never before released "You Will Never Break My Heart." Liner notes for the Stimulator's release by Henry Rollins and featuring cover art by Robert Maplethorpe.
In September 2018 Flanagan will be a featured guest on the last season of CNN's, Anthony Bourdain's Parts Unknown.
Influences
Flanagan cited Darryl Jenifer, Geezer Butler, and Lemmy as his biggest bass influences. He also stated that Cronos of Venom, Jaco Pastorious (Flanagan owns one of his basses), and Stanley Clarke inspired him, trying to "bring all that stuff together" in his own music, mixed with hardcore's intensity.[6]
Personal life
Flanagan is the father of two sons and is married to Laura Lee Flanagan, who is an attorney, PhD, serves as Flanagan's business manager and works as general counsel and CCO investment advisory firms.[7]
Flanagan is a black-belt in Brazilian jujitsu and currently works as a professor for Renzo Gracie Academy in New York City. His students include the daughter of Anthony Bourdain, who coincidentally attended NYC Stimulators concerts in the early 1980s, and was a fan of the then preteen drummer.[7]
Flanagan has been a vegetarian for most of his life.[8]

Legal issues
