A blockchain game is a video game which is based on blockchain technology.
The world's first blockchain game, Huntercoin,[1][2][3] was released in beta in September, 2013[4], with the full release in February, 2014.[1] It was forked from Namecoin[3] and runs entirely on its blockchain without servers. In the game, players earn HUC by competing against each other, which they can trade for Bitcoin.[5][3]
One of the best known examples of a blockchain game is Cryptokitties, launched in November 2017.[6] The game made headlines in December 2017 when a cryptokitty character sold for US$100,000.[7][8]
In February 2018, more than $10 million in ether was documented to be circulating within Ethereum based games, according to data collected by DappRadar.[9]
