Although he started writing as a professional journalist for a variety of small community newspapers in 2006, he soon took up a position as a professional photographer, and eventually went on the write entertainment pieces for one of South Africa's largest entertainment portals.

Early Life
Born in 1981 in Cape Town, Charlie lived in the sleepy town of Melkbosstrand until he was about one year old. His father, a construction engineer, was working on the Koeberg Power station at the time, and when the project finished, took over several building sites in the then-Transvaal, prompting his family to move to the small coal-mining town of Witbank.

Here Charlie attended Taalfees Primary School, where after he started his high school career at Hoër Tegniese Skool Witbank. He had a mediocre academic record, participated in few sports and took up higher grade Building Construction and Technical Drawing as his prescribed technical subjects.

Post-high school and Tertiary Education
After graduating from Hoër Tegniese Skool Witbank in 1999 and still undecided about his future career path, Charlie decided to take up a summer job as a camp counselor in the United States Of America . Serving as a General Counselor at Camp Wildwood in Florida in 2000, Charlie's main duties were to ensure that all the children in his cabin arrived at their activities on time. It's also at this camp where he overcame his fear of horses, later helping as a stable hand.

In 2001, Charlie took up another summer job as a camp counselor, but this time at Camp Tall Timbers in West Virginia. Receiving specialized training in rock climbing, Charlie was appointed as a qualified rock climbing instructor, and served at the camp until August 2001.

The September 11 attacks on New York in 2001 had a profound impact on Charlie, as he was due to fly back to South Africa that very day. While touring the country in early September, Charlie made a last stop in Florida, from which he was to fly to New York, and then exit back home. While packing his travel bags, CNN broke the news, grounding all commercial planes. Waiting in a hotel for four days, Charlie eventually made it to Philadelphia and then New York by bus, after which he flew to London, and on to South Africa.

The events of that day will forever haunt his memory, as he has told friends and family on numerous occasions that he will never forget the sight and smells that was emitted from ground zero.
