Brenda Andress, also known as the thought leader, is a motivational speaker, author and founder of SheIS. Andress is also a founder and the first commissioner of the Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL)[1]. She became the first commissioner of the CWHL in 2007, a position she occupied until July 31, 2018.
Prior to the CWHL, Brenda Andress rose to upper management in the field of Recreation helping communities stay healthy and fit ultimately running the city of Newmarket as the Director of Parks Recreation.
SheIS
Brenda Andress founded SheIS on February 7, 2018. With SheIS, Andress created a sisterhood through sports and a cross-pollination of support for women and girls everywhere.[2] Their mission is to "use the power of women's sport to create a future of, by, and for strong women".[2] In addition to founding a non-profit organization, Andress united commissioners and league leaders to band eight women's sports leagues together for the first time to support one another: the SheIS movement.[3]
Brenda Andress has always been a strong advocate and role model for women in sport.
Canadian Women's Hockey League
Over the past 10 years, Brenda Andress has shaped and led the CWHL's vision to create the world's most exceptional women's professional hockey league – a place where women will ultimately earn a living playing the sport at which they excel.[4]
Brenda Andress' love for hockey began at the tender age of 16 and has taken her into refereeing the game, ultimately achieving one of the highest rankings, Level 6. Since 1978, when she became the first women to ever play for a men's college varsity team, Andress has been a game-changing leader in sport.[4]
During Andress' time as commissioner, the league formed four club-to-club partnerships with NHL teams, secured a Canadian broadcast deal with Rogers Sportsnet and expanded to Boston and China.[5] Brenda Andress even established the first ever Clarkson Cup Championship and spearheaded the inaugural CWHL All-Star Game on December 13, 2014 at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto.
