Highland, Kansas is most widly known for its community college. Highland Community College is known for being the oldest college in Kansas. It was founded in 1856--before Kansas was even a state! Although the on-campus location itself is quite small, approximately 3,000 people attend courses at either the main campus location or a variety of off-campus locations some of which are much bigger than the Highland campus.

Students at HCC can get an associates degree in a variety of majors. Some of the more popular ones are art and business. The art department at highland is amazing. They have many events in the Yost Art Gallery each year as well as art day in the spring. This is an event in concoordance with high schools from all over the eastern part of Kansas.

One big thing at Highland is the new fitness Center. Opened at the end of January in 2006, the gym is a huge improvement to campus life and the town of Highland as a whole. Inside is a basketball court and tennis courts as well as a weight room with a variety of weight lifting equipment, elliptial machines, and treadmills. Students can use this facility for free, but toehr people may use it after paying a small fee.

The reason most students choose Highland Community College is the dorms. All of the old dorms are apartment style with entrance from the outside. There are a variety of options in every price range. There is the campus apartments (Kansas, Kiltie, Scottie Place, Sunflower Place, Hearthford, Hampton, Hollyoak, Colony Point, Crestview, Cornerstone, Claymont, Highlander, and Degginger). These are moderately priced. There is also Rubeti and Heritage, which are the cheapest dorms. Ellis Hall is the most expensive beause each person who lives there has their own bedroom and cabel hookup. The new dorm, Piper, is a co-ed dorm for the theatre, art and music majors. It opened in August of 2006. It is not apartment style, it is in a normal dorm format.

Highland is a city in Doniphan County, Kansas (see map). The population was 976 at the 2000 census.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.4 km² (0.5 mi²), all land.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 976 people, 316 households, and 169 families residing in the city. The population density was 711.0/km² (1,842.6/mi²). There were 344 housing units at an average density of 250.6/km² (649.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 90.27% White, 5.74% African American, 1.02% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.92% from other races, and 1.84% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.33% of the population.

There were 316 households out of which 20.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.6% were married couples living together, 7.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 46.5% were non-families. 41.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 22.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.02 and the average family size was 2.76.

In the city the population was spread out with 12.3% under the age of 18, 36.5% from 18 to 24, 14.2% from 25 to 44, 15.2% from 45 to 64, and 21.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 28 years. For every 100 females there were 95.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $25,250, and the median income for a family was $37,969. Males had a median income of $30,298 versus $22,250 for females. The per capita income for the city was $12,341. About 9.0% of families and 17.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.6% of those under age 18 and 13.9% of those age 65 or over.
