Goravanahalli Mahalakshmi Temple is located in Goravanahalli, a village in Tumkur district in Karnataka, India.
History of the Temple
It is believed that a poor man named Abbayya was blessed by Sri Mahalakshmi. After his sedulous worship and unwavering devotion, Abbayya was awarded with the blessing of wealth. Thus, he began doing charity work which lead to his home being called Lakshmi Nivas.[1]
Eventually Abbayya’s brother, Thotadappa, joined Abbayya in his charity work. After Abbayya's death, Thotadappa performed poojas to the Goddess. He was asked by Mahalakshmi in his dreams to build her a shrine. Hence, Thotadappa built a temple for her. After Thotadappa, Chowdayya started performing poojas. However, from the year 1910 onward, the temple fell into a neglected state.[1]
Upon arriving at Goravanahalli in 1925, Kamalamma, a pious devotee, saw the neglected state of the temple. She started performing the poojas for the Goddess. One year later, Kamalamma left the temple. But in 1952, Kamalamma returned to Goravanahalli and settled there. After this, regular poojas were performed by Kamalamma. Other people started arriving, waiting in queue for the darshana of Sri Mahalakshmi. In due time, the temple gained fame by the word of mouth.[1][2]
Temple Timings
The open hours at the temple are 06:30 PM to 12:30 PM and 05:30 PM to 08:00 PM.
Tuesdays and Fridays are considered auspicious, so many people visit the temple on those days and take the darshana of the deity.[3]
