In medieval siege warfare, a "sow" was a mobile armoured shelter used to protect troops and engineers during an attack on a castle or other fortified building.
In metallurgy, the term "sow" refers to a central channel down which molten metal is poured during the smelting process; the metal runs from the sow into side channels to form ingots known as "pigs" (hence the term "pig iron").
