A distillery and wine warehouse, at the turn of XIX– XX centuries.

On January the 1st 1895 the first state distillery in Perm was founded[1] which was the beginning of state wine trading in Perm Governorate. During some time it operated under the name «Winery №12».

By February 1900 a state wine warehouse had been built nearby (by architect A. B. Turchevitch) (nowadays the building is the monument of architecture of regional significance[2][3]).

The first plant’s personnel.

During the revolution of 1917 and the Civil War the alcohol and policy in Russia was restrictive. The order of November 8th, 1917declared that the production and trading alcohol in the country was prohibited and the plant ceased its activities. The part producing alcohol was closed and the equipment was dismantled[4].

In 1926 when the newly formed Soviet state started its economic activity the plant recommenced its operation. In those days handicraft techniques were used, alcohol being supplied from other distilleries. By 1939 assembly-flow production was introduced.

In Soviet times the plant was renamed into «Perm Spirits Producer».

During the World War II the part of the enterprise was given to a Ukrainian mechanical engineering plant. On October 24th, 1945 the plant was moved back to Ukraine, main building and a number of service areas being destroyed[5].

The distillery had been undergoing re-equipment and reconstruction up to 1960s[6].

The peak of production was in 1960s — mid1980s when the following vodka brands were delivered: Moskovskaya, Stolichnaya, Russkaya, Posolskaya and others. The assortment included approximately 60 product names among which there were various punches, sweet and semi-sweet nastoikas and liqueurs.

During 1985–1987 an anti-alcohol campaign with partial prohibition, colloquially known as the "dry law" was carried out so the plant had to significantly reduce its production[7].

In 1993 as a result of privatization Perm Spirits Producer became a public company and got its current name «Permalko». In those days the plant’s shares mostly belonged to the administrative personnel which was very beneficial for the enterprise that was next door to bankruptcy after the prohibition.

In 2005 the administration announced the privatization of their holdings of shares[8].

Present Days

In 2006 the company went private: controlling block of Permalko shares was bought by SPI group[9][10].

In the same year a new bottling house equipped with facilities provided by Germany and Italy; since September 2007 the low-temperature technology has been used to make the alcoholic products[11].

By 2015 the company had grown significantly[12].

In 2016 OAO Permalko, a publicly held company, became AO Permalko, a joint-stock company.
