Capital Area District Libraries (CADL) is a system of libraries in Ingham County, Michigan, United States. It was formed in 1998 by an agreement between Ingham County and the City of Lansing. It consists of thirteen libraries and a mobile library. CADL is governed by a seven-member board, five of which are selected by Ingham County, and the remaining two are selected by the City of Lansing. CADL also participates with the Michigan eLibrary. The Friends of the Library support Capital Area District Libraries through fundraising and community outreach.[1]

The City of East Lansing maintains a separate library system (East Lansing Public Library).[2]

Overview

Capital Area District Libraries has everything right here—the information you need and the entertainment you love, all in formats that work for you.

Services

CADL services fit perfectly into today’s busy lifestyle. Our online resources make the library available 24/7, with streaming and downloadable books, movies, music and more. Valuable online learning tools and subscriptions are free for the asking.

Filled with friendly, expert staff, our branches offer engaging gathering spaces where people can find resources to enrich their everyday lives. Public computers with high speed internet are available, along with Wi-Fi and charging stations. Free events range from early literacy storytimes to live concerts to technology classes.

So borrow a picture book for your kids, download a bestselling mystery, watch a movie on your tablet, attend a business class or learn a language from the comfort of your couch—it’s all right here.

Service Area

Under the leadership of an appointed Board of Trustees, CADL serves most residents in Ingham County and part of Eaton County. Our 13 branches and Mobile Library provide resources to 23 different municipalities.

In 1997, community leaders proposed forming a new district library system, created by combining the existing Ingham County Libraries with the Lansing Public Libraries. Voters agreed to fund the system with tax dollars collected through a district-wide millage. On Jan. 2, 1998, CADL opened its doors.

Millage funds provide materials, staffing and programs throughout our service area. Cities, townships and municipalities are responsible for providing and maintaining buildings. Read more about CADL’s funding here.

Community

CADL is a valuable community partner, reaching out with library services to schools, churches, senior centers and more. Our staff participates in hometown parades and celebrations, supports local charities and service organizations, and partners with other community groups across the county.
