Madden NFL 07 is a football video game which was released on August 22nd, 2006. It's also a launch title for the PlayStation 3 and the Wii. It is the 17th installment of the Madden NFL series, noted for color commentator John Madden. It features Seahawks running back Shaun Alexander, the league's 2005 Offensive MVP, on the cover. It was the second time in the franchise history that the MVP was featured on the cover, Marshall Faulk was the last.

To mark the begining of Madden NFL 06, EA Sports released Madden NFL 07 in tiny Madden, Mississippi - the only municipality in the United States to have the same name as Coach Madden. With a population of 74, each resident received a free Xbox 360 gaming console and a free copy of Madden NFL 07. NFL greats in attendance were Jerry Rice, Warren Moon, and Marshall Faulk. Madden NFL 07 was playable in full form via Xbox 360 kiosks as well.

New Features

  • The most important new feature to Madden NFL 07 is Lead Blocker Control. After selecting a running play, you will be able to cycle through your offensive players as they get into position at the line. Select the player you want to control and after the ball is snapped, the camera zooms in on the fullback, tackle, guard, center, tight end, or even wide receiver that you decided to possess. It's now up to you to open up the path for the run, as the computer controls the halfback and tries to follow your path to daylight.
  • Also new to the game is the Highlight Stick. press the right analog stick in any direction and you'll see an animation where the smaller back will duck, spin, or squirt out of a tackle. You'll even be able to combo moves with the stick, piecing together a juke left with a hop step backwards (down on the right analog stick) to leave defenders eating turf. This will add an advantage to the elusive runners, not just the backs with bulk. The Truck Stick animations still exist for the bigger backs, but now you'll see a lot more variety of running moves with the addition of the Highlight Stick.
  • NFL Superstar puts the emphasis back on the superstar, both on and off the field. That means when you create your player, you only play as that player in games. So if you create a wide receiver, you actually play only as the receiver, complete with a different camera angle showcasing your player, with special moves tied to the right analog stick for every position. That means you don't call the play. You don't throw the ball (unless you're the QB). And you don't play defense (Unless you're on the defense). For those who don't want to watch the computer play the other positions, you do have the option to take over and play that side of the ball like a normal game.

Version differences and known bugs

Playstation 2 version

  • In the game, Kansas City Chiefs Linebacker Boomer Grigsby is African-American, while in reality he is white.
  • During SuperStar Mode the game tends to lag for 1-2 seconds after each play.
  • The game tends to corrupt memory cards when playing in Superstar or Franchise mode. The corruption affects the whole memory card and renders it useless. EA refuses to acknowledge this, stating that you can go into the PS2 Browser and delete the corrupted save file (which is true in some cases), however, at this time, they refuse to acknowledge that the game can corrupt an entire card.
  • The European version of the game has a glitch where Quarterbacks in Superstar mode, when not controlled by the player, will inexplicably turn around and throw the ball backwards towards his own endzone, usually resulting in either a safety or touchdown for the other team. This is called the "Aaron Brooks glitch" by some fans, named after an NFL quarterback who did throw a pass which resulted in a backward pass fumble and loss of yards.
  • The LaDainian Tomlinson card is locked until you complete the All-Madden Ground Attack drill in the Mini-Camp, however, the reward for completing this drill is the Shaun Alexander card (as the drill is performed by the Seattle Seahwaks), NOT the LaDainian Tomlinson card. The LaDainian Tomlinson card remains locked when you complete the drill. This means that the only way to obtain the LaDainian Tomlinson card is to cheat.
  • Josh Bullocks of the New Orleans Saints is called Brodney Poole by Al Micheals.
  • QB Alex Smith of the San Francisco 49ers has the same receiving statistics as TE Alex Smith of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and has no passing statistics.
  • When Playing in Franchise mode(After Fantasy Drafts), players will disappear. Vince Young and Robert Gallery most notably.
  • There are multiple stadiums that display the name of the wrong team in one of the endzones. Some of the teams affected are: Pittsburgh, Arizona, Green Bay, Jacksonville, Carolina, Oakland, Tampa Bay and Indianapolis.

Xbox version

  • In the game, Kansas City Chiefs Linebacker Boomer Grigsby is African-American, while in reality he is white.
  • The European version of the game has a glitch where Quarterbacks in Superstar mode, when not controlled by the player, will inexplicably turn around and throw the ball backwards towards his own endzone, usually resulting in either a safety or touchdown for the other team.
  • If running a QB sneak and a first down is attained, it will say "Touchdown (insert team name here)!!" whether or not it is a touchdown.
  • The AFC playoff seeds are not in correct order. This is an issue that has appeared in all previous PC and Xbox Madden releases.
  • Just before you begin the offseason in NCAA Football 07 you are made aware which players graduate and which enter the draft. When the draft class is exported from NCAA and imported to Madden these players simply vanish -- some of them are all of them are not on the draft board. Also some players that meremy graduate end up listed on the draft board. This issue has been around for years.
  • Sometimes a CPU player that has possession of the ball will throw a failed stiff arm, get turned around, run the wrong way for several yards before attempting to correct it.

Xbox 360 version

  • Players did not show fatigue in the original release of the game, but a patch was released in September which fixed the problem and allowed fatigue to be shown in the meters on the play-calling screen.
  • Hall of Fame players will enter the free agency pool in the franchise mode, and they can't be taken out. This means that hall of fame greats can be signed by any team. To avoid Hall of Fame players coming into an offline mode like Franchise or Superstar mode, one must only save their roster with no Hall of Famers unlocked and reload this roster before beginning a franchise or superstar.
  • When games are simulated during franchise mode, defenders always receive an even number of interceptions (be it 2, 4, 6 and so on). No player can accumulate just one interception except when a game is manually played.
  • The Hall of Fame feature allows the player to view videos of pro football's best.
  • Players ages fluctuate randomly in franchise mode -- sometimes jumping three years after being drafted, other time dropping a year as their career moves forward.
  • Quarterback's stats are largely inflated in franchise mode.
  • Ratings of defenders tend to steadily decrease during franchise mode, especially when simulating. 5-10 years into a franchise, most of the best defenders are rated in the 80s, with some positions having no one above 80 in the entire NFL.
  • You cannot edit player names or positions any longer.
  • When downloading updated rosters from Xbox Live, Marcus Vick of the Miami Dolphins is shown to be white instead of African-American.
  • When downloading updated rosters from Xbox Live many players, such as running backs Travis Minor (Miami Dolphins) and Mike Bell (Denver Broncos) are incorrectly given dreadlocks.

Gamecube Version

  • The Gamecube version does not feature the NFL Films music, or the NFL Films remixes as an option to play on the menus.
  • In Superstar mode, if you run at the goalline and get a touchdown, the influence screen will pop up and will say back to the line and give you minus influence points, and then will say touchdown.
  • If you force a sack on 4th down with less than 2:00 to go in the 4th quarter in superstar mode, the announcer will say "(insert player's name here) with the sack. GAIN OF __ ON THE PLAY" The __ is a random number, usually over 60.

Wii Version

  • The Wii version contains all the features and modes found in the other next generation builds and also contains an extra practice mode.
  • Additionally, the Wii version contains an exclusive 2-on-2 mode, where players can play schoolyard football, and are required to do the missisippi count.
  • The Wii version control is unique to all other versions of Madden. With the Wii-mote and Nunchuk Controllers, players can imitate virtually all football maneuvers. EA has called this "FreeMotion." Some examples of FreeMotion include:
  • Hike: When a player wants to hike the ball, the player pulls the Wii-mote back.
  • QB: The player selects the receiver by pressing the A button, or up, down, left, right on the D-Pad then make the actual passing motion with the Wii-mote. If motioned slowly, the player will lob it. If motioned fast, the ball will fly like a bullet. The actual QB is moved around with the Nunchuk controller's analog stick.
  • RB: The player can stiff arm a defender by motioning left or right with the Wii-mote. To juke, the player motions left or right with the Nunchuk. To push for extra yards or a goal line stand, a player pushes both controllers forward.
  • WR: The player can choose to play as a wide receiver and make the catch. When catching, the player must raise both the Wii-mote and the Nunchuk in the air to make the catch.

PC Version

  • There are no video tutorials, but there are in-game literature to explain new features.

Trivia

  • There were ads for this game saying that it will feature 2 key running plays -- including the touchdown run by LaDainian Tomlinson that won the game for the Chargers in overtime in Week 12 against the Redskins. The other was a running touchdown by Larry Johnson for the Chiefs against the Raiders.
  • Tedy Bruschi does not have a player photo in the Xbox 360 version.
  • The Vikings Stadium, the HHH Metrodome still has the Randy Moss and Daunte Culpepper livery but their numbers are not visible.
  • When a team scores or gets a first down as the Panthers there will be Panther roars. If the player plays as the Vikings, a sound of a Viking horn will be heard, when playing as the Broncos stampeding horses will be heard, when playing as the Jaguars, a roar will be heard.
  • Bill Parcells and Bill Belichick are not head coaches in the game, instead they are named Dallas Coach and NE Coach. This is because Parcells is still under contract from ESPN, while Belichick is not part of the NFL head coaches union.
  • If a receiver makes a long catch, the sound of a cannon firing can be heard.
  • The JumboTron at Dolphin Stadium is much bigger than the one shown on the game. This may be because the scoreboard was renovated only a few months before Madden NFL 07 came out.
  • There are many players listed as free agents on the default rosters provided by the game that were actually drafted and signed to teams by the time of the game's release. Among others, these players include (with the teams that drafted them listed concurrently): Bruce Gradkowski (Tampa Bay - Xbox 360 version only), Stephen Gostkowski (New England), Greg Blue (Minnesota), Willie Reid (Pittsburgh), Omar Gaither (Philadelphia), Jason Avant (Philadelphia), Jeremy Bloom (Philadelphia - XBox 360 version only), Darnell Bing (Oakland), J.D. Runnels (Chicago), Dusty Dvoracek (Chicago), Domenik Hixon (Denver), Michael Robinson (San Francisco),David Kirtman (Seattle) and, Greg Jennings (Packers).

Soundtrack

There was a song made by Fergie named "London Bridge" that didn't made the cut for the soundtrack because of its many sexual references.
