Amy Gutmann (1949 - ), Ph.D., is a political theorist who taught at Princeton University from 1976 to 2004 and served as its Provost. In 2004 she became the 8th president of the University of Pennsylvania. She is currently being considered as a candidate to replace former Harvard University President Lawrence Summers by the University's governing board, however, she has stated she herself is not considering the role [1].
Upon succeeding former University of Pennsylvania president Judith Rodin, Gutmann became the first female president to succeed a female president of an Ivy League university.
She is married to Michael Doyle, a professor at Columbia University. She has had a controversial tenure, with many people wondering how her legacy will compare to the university's first female president, Judith Rodin.
Halloween Controversy
Recently, she has been under heavy public criticism [2] for posing for a photo [3] with a student dressed as a suicide bomber at the annual Halloween costume party hosted by the Penn President in October 2006. The engineering student, Saad Saadi, posed with Gutman while holding a plastic automatic machine gun and wearing a suicide bomber belt filled with fake dynamite. Saadi also later posed for photographs at the same party while holding a copy of the Koran and carrying out mock executions--though not with Gutmann, who allegedly refused.
Education
She received a B.A. (magna cum laude) from Radcliffe College in 1971, a Masters in Political Science from the London School of Economics in 1972, and a Ph.D. in Political Science from Harvard in 1976. [4]
