St. Petersburg Human Rights Ordinance
The St.Petersburg Human Rights Ordinance is a law passed in January 2002. The law added sexual orientation as a protected status in housing, employment, and public accommodations. Equality Florda is an political advocacy group that advocates for equal LGBTQ rights for residents of Florida. This organization played a heavy hand in passing the St. Petersburg Human rights ordinance .[1][2]
AH Notes: Good that you brought these items together here, and I can see you've got the citation tool mastered. Good work! Let me know if uncovering sources continues to be a problem. A good place to start might be newspaper coverage from around the time the law was passed, or even previously since there was likely some debate about it before it went through. You may also want to confer with the group that is researching Equality Florida (Chika, Tiffany, Rose, Amanda) since they'll doubtless come across the Ordinance too.

Article Evaluation: Tone
Overall, the author seems to attempt to keep the article neutral but fails in a few instances. First, her word choice in the first sentence of the chapter 6 analysis displays diction favorable towards Rankine's attempt at engaging empathy in the reader. In conjunction, the author of this article displays bias when they say, " In addition, in this passage the author gave a hidden answer to the question of racism. The author used second person as an argument and way of pointing fingers to denunciate an ongoing injustice of human segregations. Rankine used these continued passages as a reminder of the black American history that continues to exist in this century." This is bias, because she exclaims that the author has provided an "answer", but that is only in the writes opinion, not of known fact.
Research Notes, 9/25
Hi Haylee! You have been assigned to write an article on the St. Petersburg Human Rights Ordinance. This topic is not yet covered by Wikipedia, though it is mentioned in an article on the LGBTQ rights advocacy organization, Equality Florida. Here are your research notes from class on 9/25:
- What is the law?
- Reasoning of why it was passed
Another Post-It I found (not sure who was the author) notes: "Interesting because there is no info on it and it was an important law that added sexual orientation as a protect status in housing, accommodations, and employment in St. Pete."
