Dorian Andrew Mientjez Yates (born April 19, 1962 in Sutton Coldfield, England), is the most successful professional British bodybuilder to date, winning the Mr. Olympia title six times from 1992 until 1997. Yates became known for his tremendous back muscularity.

Early life

Yates lived by himself in Birmingham throughout his teenage years and was involved in the punk scene. One night during rioting in the city, he went into a looted shop and picked up a dress and wig thinking it would be funny to wear the stuff to a party he was going to. The police didn't see it that way and he was arrested and placed in a young offenders institute for a few months.

It was here that he discovered that he had the potential to become a bodybuilder, after excelling in the circuit training exercises all offenders had to do every morning and afternoon. A prison guard spotted his ability and recommended he take up bodybuilding, telling him to go to a certain gym in Birmingham when he was released. Dorian never went but this experience helped build up his self-confidence and gave him a newfound sense of direction in life through bodybuilding.
