Captchas won't work on the Reference Desk as you suggested. It should be obvious now that Wikipedia's Captcha system doesn't work. New accounts are created in an automated fashion, automating the Captcha, and then random edits are made to make the account a fully usable account. Previously, dozens of socks held in reserve were used just to demonstrate that they exist. This is obviously being done on purpose. I wonder how long it will take for users to realize who is behind it. If it is who I think it is, I don't expect it to last forever. It is just a proof of concept for a tool to attack Wikipedia.
