State Road 162 (NM 162) is a 2.6-mile-long (4.2 km) state highway in the US state of New Mexico. NM 162's southern terminus is at U.S. Route 84 (US 84) west-southwest of Tierra Amarilla, and the northern terminus is at US 64/US 84 north of Tierra Amarilla. History
NM 162 was created in the 1950s after US 84 was moved west of Tierra Amarilla. It originally turned in Tierra Amarilla and followed the current NM 573 north to the current NM 512. It then turned west and followed current NM 512 west towards US 84 and US 84 north of Brazos. In the 1988 renumbering NM 512 and NM 573 were created and NM 162's northern terminus was changed to its current location.[2][3]
State Road 162 and the Rio Arriba Courthouse raid
In the center of Tierra Amarilla, State Road 162 passes by the Rio Arriba County Courthouse, site of a significant event in the 1960s Chicano Movement. Followers of land-grant activist Reies Lopez Tijerina had been taken into custody following an incident in the nearby village of Coyote. Tijerina rallied members of his La Alianza group to assault the courthouse and release the prisoners held there, and to place a citizen's arrest on District Attorney Alfonso Sánchez for violating the Alianza's right of peaceable assembly in Coyote. On June 6, 1967, Tijerina led a group to the courthouse. The ensuing confrontation, which local historians describe as having gone "extraordinarily wrong",[4] devolved into a shootout in which two men, a New Mexico State Police officer and a jailer, were seriously wounded.
