Ultraman Leo ([ウルトラマンレオ, Urutoraman Reo] Error: {{nihongo}}: text has italic markup (help)) is a Japanese tokusatsu TV show and is the 7th show in the Ultra Series. Produced by Tsuburaya Productions, Ultraman Leo was aired between April 12, 1974, and March 28, 1975, with a total of 51 episodes. Tatsumi Nikamoto was the in-suit actor of Ultraman Leo.

Plot

Ultraman Leo comes from Nebula L77 (Leo constellation), and takes the human form of Gen Ohtori. Ultraseven appears to fight a new foe, Alien Magma and his two "pets", the Red and Black Gillas. Ultimately, Ultraseven is greatly overpowered and his leg is graphically broken by Black Gillas. Ultraman Leo drives off the foes, but Ultraseven is confined to his human form because of his injuries and due to the Ultraeye being damaged when he attempted to transform. Dan then maintains his role as Captain of MAC (Monster Attack Crew). Gen is a gymnastics teacher on the side and joins MAC to defend the Earth. Gen and Dan regularly train together, allowing Ultraman Leo to learn many moves in human form. In episode 34, Dan asks Ultraman Jack to take the Ultraeye back to M78 to be restored while he heals on Earth. However, in Episode 40 MAC is destroyed by Silver Bloom, a saucer monster that belongs to Commander Black. During the attack Dan asks Leo to keep defending the Earth and disappears in the conflagration. It is later shown that he was taken back to M78 to be fully healed and restored as Ultraseven. Gen is now unemployed and spends most of his time training the kids to defend themselves as well as defending the Earth as Ultraman Leo. Commander Black and alien bunyo captures Gen when he cannot transform completely. Gen as Leo is then dismembered, only to be brought back to life by Ultraman King. Leo would face Black's final monster, Black End, with the kids he trained, the latter of whom kill Black, and hand the sphere used to control Black End to Leo. Finishing his mission, Gen removes his Leo Ring and sets off to tour Earth, his "second home".

• Leo Kick
  Ultraman Leo's Signature Ability. Ultraman Leo jumps to an amazing height of at least 1,000 meters into the air and charges his foot with energy, striking his opponent with a powerful jumpkick. It can destroy monsters with one blow. There are several variations of this ability that are seen throughout the show. Also including the tailspin kick, a double-foot kick and a two-step kick.
• Tailspin Kick
  Another kicking technique, used to kick the heads of the Gillas twins in episode 2. The first weapon that Gen trained by his mentor Dan Moroboshi to perfect this technique.
• Leo Chop
  Ultraman Leo can charge his hands with the same energy of his Leo Kick and chop his enemies to bits. There are several variations of this ability that are seen throughout the show.
• Hand Slicer
  An energy from his hand and can slice through monsters.
• Judo
  Leo is highly skilled in a form of Judo called Space Judo. He is highly skilled in several Martial Arts moves. These include suplexes, throws, chops, and flips. Also, Leo received further training from Ultraseven, especially when he suffered defeat against an enemy, allowing him to win the next time.
• Leo Lift
  Leo can able to lift up 200,000 tons of monster and throw it down. Used against Alien Boze in episode 19.
• Leo Nunchucks
  Ultraman Leo can conjure up a pair of Nunchucks to do battle when the time and space allows him to. Used in episode 11 to against Alien Kettle.
• Wrist Beam
  Leo can emit a powerful beam from the devices on his wrist which can destroy monsters in one blow.
• Timer Shot
  Leo can emit a blue laser-like beam from his color timer, but only while it glows blue. Used against Alien Vermin in episode 31 and Absorba in episode 42.
• Relive Ray
  An energy ray Leo can emit from both eyes. Used to bring the dead back to life like Alien Giro.
• Energy Light Ball
  Leo can emit a powerful red energy ball from his jointed hands. Used against the monsters like Bekira, Batton, Alien Flip and Bunyo.
• Dark Shooter
  Leo can emit a small black arrow-shaped energy blast from his hands. Used to take down flying foes like Black Terrina.
• Full-Body Radiation
  Leo can emit a powerful wave of heat from his very being in beam form. Used in episode 39 to melt the ice that Alien Babalou used to imprison Leo's brother, Astra.
• Ultra Shot
  A small white energy blast Leo can emit from his hands when jumping into the air. Aimed at enemy's weak spot. Used against Demos in episode 43 and Blizzard in episode 45. Also known as the Mid-Air Slice Beam.
• Shooting Beam
  An extremely powerful beam Leo can fire from his both arms. Used against Nova and others. Can destroy entire planets (such as the evil Black Star in the final episode).
• Green Beam
  Leo can emit an energy ray from his hands that will pacify a monster like Kirara so that the monster can go back to the moon.
• Leo Cross Beam
  Leo can emit two powerful streams of zig-zagging lasers from the beam lamp on his forehead. Used against King Paradai. Also had another thinner version known as the Beam Lamp Ray.
• Fingertip Beam
  Leo can emit a powerful yellow energy beam from his fingertips when they're pointed forward together.
• Leo Flash
  Leo can use energy from his color timer through both of his fists and release it like a blue flash. Can destroy monsters in one hit.
• Ultra Mant
  Presented with the cape of Ultraman King, Ultraman Leo can conjure up objects and stop/fizzle out incoming projectile attacks with the item. It also can transform into a various things, like a defensive umbrella and the doors of a mirror. He usually stored as an arm band on his upper left arm.
• Leo Umbrella
  Leo turn his Ultra Mant into a defensive umbrella and used against Alien Pressure in episode 26.
• Windmill
  A small weapon created by the monster Rolan, used to against the Alien Magma in episode 30.
• Ultra Double Flasher
  With the help of Astra, Leo and Astra can fire a very powerful red beam of lightning together from their hands. Able to destroy several powerful monsters. Used against Gallon, Litter and Alien Akumania.
• Zero Double Flasher
  With the help of Ultraman Zero, Leo and Zero can fire a very powerful red and green beam of lightning together from their hands. Able to destroy several powerful monsters. Used in Ultra Galaxy Legend Gaiden: Ultraman Zero vs. Darklops Zero together with Zero against the Fake Ultra Brothers.
• Ultra Double Spark
  Joins with his brother Astra to repair the broken Ultra Key in episode 39.

Astra

Astra (アストラ Asutora) is the younger brother of Ultraman Leo. He came to earth after learning that Leo had survived the destruction of their home planet Nebula L-77 and appeared several times in the series, assisting him several times when the odds were stacked against Leo.

Astra came from the desert Nebula L77 of the Leo constellation. After the destruction of L77 by the Alien Magma, Leo, Astra, and Leo's pet monster Ron were the last survivors, but Leo thought he was the last of his kind. As Leo and Ron landed on Earth, Astra was captured and held prisoner by the Alien Magma until he was eventually rescued by Ultraman King. After Ultraman King told him of Leo's survival, Astra headed for Earth and rescued his brother during a battle against Garon and Littre. Ever since Astra has saved Leo against several different aliens over the months that were too powerful for Leo to defeat himself. At one point Alien Babalou froze Astra in a special type of ice in space and took his identity as he stole the Ultra Key. After Ultraman King revealed Babalou for what he was, Leo saved Astra from his icy imprisonment, defeated Babalou, gave back the Ultra Key, and the two brothers became the first Ultra Brothers that were born outside of Nebula M78. Astra continued to help Leo after helping him destroy the Saucer Monster, Hangler.

Even though Astra is the least active of the Ultra Brothers in the new series Ultraman Mebius, he is present during the series finale, assisting his brother Leo using the Ultra Double Flasher in destroying the coating that was surrounding the sun.

Later on, Astra appeared in the film Mega Monster Battle: Ultra Galaxy Legend The Movie, watching over Ultraman Zero’s training with Ultraman Leo. When Seven’s eye slugger was sent as an S.O.S., Ultraman King sent Zero to the battle, followed shortly by Leo and Astra. When they arrived, Zero had already defeated Belial and blasted him into a river of molten magma. However no sooner had they arrived, when the spirits of 100 monsters started to flow towards Belial and formed Beryudora. Leo and Astra then did their combo attack while everyone else attacked Beryudora on their own until Zero finished him off. Astra and Leo then returned to the Land of Light with the others. Astra also reappeared in the movie Ultraman Zero: The Revenge of Belial.

MAC (Monster Attacking Crew)

A space patrol team dedicated to protecting spaceships and defending the Earth against invasion from outer space. Unlike previous teams, the membership changes with alarming frequency when people are killed off or disappear. This has the effect of making MAC one of the most realistic groups. Bases in geosynchronous orbit over the North and South America, Africa, Northern Europe, and Asia (Japan of course). The 100 members of MAC Asia is led by Dan Moroboshi, the human form of Ultraseven (an Ultraman as a captain is another first) and also has the distinction of being the only Ultra support team to completely annihilated (episode 40). There are two gender-specific uniforms and three logo designs. MAC supports Ultraman Leo.

• Captain Moroboshi Dan (モロボシ・ダン, Moroboshi Dan) (Played by Kohji Moritsugu)
  The human form of Ultraseven who serves as captain of MAC. Unable to transform after having his leg damaged in episode 1 at the hands of Alien Magma and the Gillas twins. Walks with a metal cane. serves as Gen's mentor and trainer and helps him when necessary with the physically draining Ultra Will Power. In episode 40 when MAC headquarters was destroyed he was nowhere to be seen later in the final episode he appeared in Gen's dream. Agent #1.
• Gen Ohtori (Ultraman Leo) (おゝとりゲン (ウルトラマンレオ), Ōtori Gen) (Played by Ryu Manatsu)
  The human form of Ultraman Leo from L77 in the Leo Zodiac. Adopts Earth as his second home after his home planet is destroyed by Alien Magma and the Gillas twins. Joins MAC after Captain Dan Moroboshi loses his ability to transform into Ultraseven. Athletic 20-year old who also serves as the coach for the children at the Johnan Sports Club. Has girlfriend from the Sports Club named Momoko, who is killed in episode 40. After MAC and said Sports Club are destroyed in episode 40, Gen takes up residence with the Miyama family. Lacking any discernable source O income, Leo qualifies as the first homeless, unemployed Ultraman. Agent #7.
• Akio Kuroda (黒田 明雄, Kuroda Akio) (Played by Soh Kuroda)
  Serves a sort of deputy captain role. Agent #3. Final appearance in episode 10.
• Kiyohiko Akaishi (赤石 清彦, Akaishi Kiyohiko) (Played by Kenji Ohshima)
  More involved with mechanical checks than actual combat. Agent #6. Final appearance in episode 16.
• Ichiroh Aoshima (青島 一郎, Aoshima Ichirō) (Played by Yuh-ichi Yanagisawa)
  Often gets into confrontations with Gen, but also has a good-natured side. Agent #5. Final appearance in episode 16.
• Junko Shirakawa (白川 純子, Shirakawa Junko) (Played by Mieko Mita)
  Mostly relegated to a communications role within headquarters. The one notable exception is stint in episode 4, piloting the Mackie #4, Agent #8. One of the few original cast members to make it all the way to episode 40.
• Momoi Haruko (桃井 晴子, Haruko Momoi) (Played by Kyohko Aratama)
  Communications specialist, much like Shirakawa. Doesn't have too many appearances. Agent #9. Final appearance in episode 16.
• Suzuki (鈴木, Suzuki) (Played by Shinya Kashima)
  An early casuality. Dies in episode 3 at the hands of Alien Tsuruk.
• Atsushi Hirayama (平山 あつし, Hirayama Atsushi) (Played by Nobuo Hirasawa)
  Has very few dialog opportunities. Takes over as agent #3 after Kuroda. Appears from episodes 11 through 18.
• Ippei Kajita (梶田 一平, Kajita Ippei) (Played by Takashi Asakura)
  Frequently pilots the Mackie #2. First appears in episode 17 and makes it to episode 40.
• Daisuke Satoh (佐藤 大介, Satō Daisuke) (Played by Shigeo Tezuka)
  Another deputy-captain type. Hirayama's replacement. First appears in episode 22 and makes through episode 40.
• Jun Shirado (白土 純, Shirado Jun) (Played by Masaharu Matsuzaka)
  First appears in episode 6 and promptly loses his girlfriend who was killed by Alien Karly. Resumes regular appearances with episode 22 and makes through episode 40.
• Yoji Kitayama (北山洋, Yoji Kitayama) (Played by Ken Utata)
  Rescues Alien Alpha in episode 21. Expert Skier.
• Matsuki Haruko (松木 晴子, Haruko Matsuki) (Played by Tomoko Ai)
  Another Communication specialist type. Momoi's replacement. First appears in episode 29 and makes through episode 40.
• Other nameless Agents (Played by Various)
  One of many ill-fated nameless members of MAC being killed by monsters and aliens.

MAC Mecha

Similar to ZAT before it, MAC has Mecha that are outlandish.

• MAC Headquarters
  MAC Asia headquarters floats 400 kilometers above the Earth in geosynchronous orbit. It is one of the five that serve as space lighthouses and the frontline of plantary defence. Annihilated in episode 40 by Commander Black's Silver Bloom. MAC also has at least one ground base.
• Mackie #1
  Usually docked to MAC headquarters. Large aircraft that can carry Mackies #2 and #3 in its central payload area. Appears only in episodes 1 and 3.
• Mackie #2
  Mid-sized fighter craft. Can separate into rocket A and saucer B. Fires missiles and a laser from nosecone. Launches from a catapult in headquarters.
• Mackie #3
  Small-sized fighter. Capable of stationary hovering. Fires missiles and a laser from nosecone. Launches from a catapult in headquarters.
• MAC Helicopter
  Appeared only in episode 27. Used to deliver fruit to monster Oni-on. It's a recolored version of ZAT Dragon.
• MAC Roadie
  MAC's patrol vehicle and mobile command center. Has a nuclear engine. Armed with an atomic bazooka and MAC laser. A converted Mitsubishi Jeep.
• MAC Car
  A weaponless car. A Honda Civic with a yellow stripe and a MAC logo slapped on.
• MAC Shark
  MAC submarine that never makes it into the actual show, although it makes it into the opening credits beginning with episode 28. It's also mentioned in the MAC song.
• MAC Mole
  MAC drill subterranean tank that also never makes it into the actual show (not even in the opening credits). It's also mentioned in the MAC song.
• MAC Gun
  Worn on the MAC belt. Cartridges can be carried on the silver outer MAC uniform.
• MAC Blaster
  A very big nuclear gun that fires a 60,000 degree (celcius) laser.
• MAC Special gun
  A very special gun.
• MAC Knife
  Blade used for hand-to-hand combat. Made of high Manganese steel. No relation to Mack the Knife.

US television premiere and streaming release

• Honolulu, Hawaii-based on-air broadcaster of Japanese programming, KIKU-TV, the home of the tokusatsu or Kikaida craze of the 1970s, began airing all 51 episodes of the series on Friday, January 3, 2014, at 6:30 PM (Hawaiian Standard Time) in Japanese with English Subtitles. In 1975, an English-dubbed version of Ultra Seven was broadcast on Honolulu's NBC affiliate KHON-TV.

• On November 12, 2014, Crunchyroll obtained the streaming rights to the series from Tsuburaya Productions and began posting the Hawaiian subtitled episodes on their streaming service for the US, Canada, Latin America, UK, Australia, and New Zealand.

• The television network TOKU premiered the series with English subtitles in the United States on November 29, 2017.

  Leo took part in the battle against Ultraman Belial with the rest of the Space Garrison, but like the others was ultimately unable to stop Belial from initiating "Crisis Impact". Although it seemed like the entire universe was going to be destroyed, Ultraman King merged his lifeforce with that of the universe to repair the damage and revive all life within it. Leo's whereabouts remain unknown after Crisis Impact, as no Ultras were known to have visited the Earth since the event, prior to Geed's human form, Riku Asakura, learning of his true self.
