Žygimantas Liauksminas Template:Lang-lat (1596 or 1597 Samogitia, Lithuania – 11th September 1670, Vilnius, Lithuania) – SJ, Lithuanian theologian, philosopher, theorist of rhetorics and music, founder of Lithuanian musicology, one of the first Lithuanian professors and rectors of the University of Vilnius.
Biography
Ž. Liauksminas was a jesuit since 1616. In 1618-1619 he studied rhetorics in Pultusk, in 1619-1621 philosophy at the University of Vilnius, in 1625-1629 - theology. In 1642 Liauksminas became a Doctor of Theology.
In 1631-1635 Ž. Liauksminas taught rhetorics in the Polotsk College (Collegium Polocense) and Nyasvizh College (Collegium Nesvisiensis), in 1635-1638 - philosophy at the University of Vilnius, in 1638-1642 theology, in 1642-1644 philosohpy at Braunsberg College (Collegium Hosianum). Was a rector in 1644-1647 the Plock College, in 1650-1655 the Polock College, in 1661-1665 Kražiai College (Collegium Crozensis). In 1655-1658 he was vice-rector of the University of Vilnius, in 1665-1670 - vice-chancellor.
He was a vice-provincial superior of Lithuania in the Jesuit Order, in 1645-1646 he substituted a provincial superior and administered a religious province during the IX General Congregation, as general elector from Lithuanian jesuits he also participated in X (1652) and XI (1661) General Congregations in Rome.
