She finished fourth in Mnet's girl group survival show Produce 101, and is a former member of the now disbanded South Korean girl group I.O.I. She was born Kim Chan-mi (김찬미), but she changed her name to Chungha shortly before participating in Produce 101.

Chungha was born on February 9, 1996 in South Korea. She lived in Dallas, Texas for eight years before returning to South Korea to become a singer. As a result, she is able to speak both English and Korean.[2] She auditioned for YG Entertainment and was a former JYP Entertainment trainee[3] before joining her current agency M&H Entertainment.[4] She trained for three years before debuting, and had been dancing for 6–7 years. She revealed on Hit The Stage that she almost quit dancing due to financial issues but she asked her family to allow her to continue as she was confident in it.[citation needed]
