Neil grew up in the small town of Flesherton, Ontario playing hockey for the "E" level Hawks minor hockey program in the OMHA. He then graduated to the Grey-Bruce Highlanders AAA program in Bantam before signing with the Orangeville Crushers Jr.B. club in 1995.

Neil was selected in the 7th round of the OHL Priority Selection by the North Bay Centennials on June 1, 1996 held in Kitchener, ON.

He is perhaps best known in his role as an enforcer and "trash-talker", but in the past season he has developed into a more complete player and has beat his previous personal career best for goals and assists.
