Robert Kenneth Beausoleil, or Bobby Beausoleil, is a being who is emblematic of the supposed loss of innocence of the 1960s, post JFK murder.
Born in 1947, in Santa Barbara, he's a prison inmate, who, at times, can resemble Robert Palmer and at other times Jim Jones. The soundtrack he composed and recorded for Lucifier Rising, the film by Kenneth Anger, is considered a classic. Along with creativity and musical talent, he's possibly most famous for being associated with Charlie Manson's Family, although, according to Bobby, there never was a Family. He met Charlie Manson in Topanga Canyon in 1966 and joined a band he was in called The Milky Way.
Bobby was convicted of killing Gary Hinman on July 25th, 1969, another Topanga Canyon resident, in whose house Bobby had lived. According to a Oui interview, conducted in summer, 1980 and published in November, 1981, Beausoleil had come to collect $1000 related to a mescaline transaction. He was under pressure from the Straight Satans, a motorcycle gang, who were unimpressed with the product procured therein. It wasn't mescaline but rather strychnine. Accompanying Beausoleil that night were Susan Atkins and Mary Brunner. Hinman refused to pay back the money, in either cash or items worth that amount, and Hinman, under tremendous pressure, took advantage of the situation by unsheathing the knife he carried with him for his long road trips.
Whilte augmented, on LSD, Bobby's life changed while watching The Byrds play their singular electric folk. Opening for The Byrds that night was a racially integrated band, called The Grass Roots, fronted by the charismatic Arthur Lee. Bobby convinced Lee that his group needed a rhythm guitarist.
During his time as the rhythm guitarist in The Grass Roots, he packed the Brave New World, a private club for the gay scene, by telling the freaks from the Sunset Strip that The Grass Roots and the Brave New World was what was really going on. That night ended that club's exclusively gay association and became the new "happening" place.
When Arthur changed his band's name to Love, according to Beausoleil, it was in honor of Bobby, sometimes called Bummer Bob, who had a particular Grass Roots-era nickname of Cupid.
