Norman Arthur Wood (1889 – 28 July 1916) was an English professional football inside left who played in the Football League for Stockport County.[1] His play was described as "unselfish, for with a crafty left foot he made openings and opportunities for colleagues".[4]

Personal life

In February 1915, six months into the First World War, Wood enlisted in the 17th (Service) Battalion of the Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex Regiment).[5] He had earlier tried to enlist in the Army in May 1906, but was discharged after misstating his age.[3] Wood rose to the rank of sergeant, despite being demoted to corporal for absenteeism in November 1915.[3] He was killed at Delville Wood in July 1916 and he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.[3]
