Development

Ancestors Legacy was announced as being in development phase on 10 May 2017.[1] Following the announcement, the company launched its first trailer of the game on July 31 which depicted over a 100 battles in a historically-accurate armaments.[2] The game had entered into an open beta phase on 5 February 2018.[3] The game's single player preview beta build was released during the Gamescom[4] on 3 September 2017.[5]

Initially both version supposed to come out on the same day (22 May),[6] but then on 22 August 2018, at the 2018 Gamescom it was announced by the 1C Company that the Xbox One version is soon to come out.[7]

Gameplay

The player has a choice to play the campaign scenario or multiplayer game in which he can choose to play one of the four civilizations: Vikings, Anglo-Saxons, Teutons, or Slavs. The game features a day/night cycle which changes the way factions play.

Single player

The game have a campaign or two for every nation. The Anglo-Saxon campaign have the likes of Edward the Confessor, William the Conqueror and Earl of Huntingdon.[8] For the Vikings campaign the game is set in 793 and is divided in two parts. The first part is set during the raid of Lindisfarne's monastery which was the fundamental beginning of Viking Age and serves as a tutorial. Once the tutorial is completed the other campaigns become available.[9] The second part is set in 892 and is dedicated to Rurik, a Varangian chieftain during the Ladoga campaign.[10] The Slavs and Teutons have a campaign each. During the campaigns, the AI is brutal because it is able to replace losses and send large armies to your base.[9]

Multi player

The multiplayer aspect of the game provides Domination and Annihilation choices[11] during which a player can have as many as 10 squads.[9]

Updates

In September 2018, Destructive Creations had added a second Slav campaign where the player can lead Bolesław I the Brave of Poland[12] and his son Mieszko II.[13]

In December 2018, Destructive Creations had announced the release of a free-to-download campaign called Ancestors Legacy: History of the Teutonic Order. The campaign, which is made out of five story missions, is divided in two parts. The first part will tell the story of Herkus Monte and his rebellion against the Teutonic Order during the Great Prussian Uprising in Magdeburg. The second part of the campaign is dedicated to the Commander of the Teutonic Order Konrad von Tirberg and the siege of rebel bastion, the Lidzbark Castle. All of the new content is set in the 13th century.[14]

Reception

Charles Ellis of the Strategy Gamer had compared it to the Company of Heroes, set in the Dark Ages. It also praised randomizing of resources in multiplayer mode, criticized its inability to put buildings as you want, and at the end said that "If you enjoy Vikings and The Last Kingdom then you’ll be right at home".[26] IGN had said that despite some historical inaccuracies and some tactical issues, the game was traditional in the RTS form.[17]
