Navalram Jagnnath Trivedi (1895-1944) was a Gujarati writer, critic and editor. His short stories, essays and articles were published in Gujarati magazines like Nutan Gujarat and Vasant. He wrote under three pen-names; Vainetey, Ponipachis and Daberi. He served as a secretary of Gujarat Sahitya Sabha for twenty years.

Life

Trivedi was born 11 October 1895 in Wadhwan in Audichya Sahastra Brahmin family. He completed schooling at Wadhwan Camp and passed his matriculation in 1914. After earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1920, he started his career as a professor at Lalshankar Gujarati Mahila Pathashala. In 1926 (1916), he completed his Master of Arts. He died on 18 May 1944 (8 May) at Ahmedabad.

Works

His book Gramyamata (Collection of Kalapi poems) was published in 1938 and was approved as Text book for school students. In his book Shesh Vivechano which was published in 1947 he has critically examined quality and style of writings of more than 200 books which included books written by many books written by well-known authors viz.  Dhumketu¹, Zaverchand Meghani², Kanaiyalal Munshi³, Jyotindra Dave, Gunvantrai Acharya, Ramanlal Vasantlal Desai and this wonderful creation of Shri Navalram was text book in Gujarat University for many years.

Well-known Gujarati author Dhumketu in his seventeen page long detailed preface of Navalram’s book titled “Ketki no Pushpo” has described style of this young author as progressive, thought provoking satire with humour. Dhumketu has appreciated Shri Navalram’s keen observation and had mentioned that in case of historical event whenever Dhumketu wanted some information or had doubt about information; which he had with him; he was used to refer Navalram because he knew that there was a critic in Gujarat who was able to point out. About Dhumketu, Navalram has mentioned that a successful author can be a successful critic ‘A hero is a hero at all points’.

In year 1921 when Navalram was only 26 years old Indulal Yagnik had selected him to translate Bengali book written by Maharishi Arvind Ghosh on his experiences in Jail. This book was given title “Karavas (Jail) ni Kahani (story)”. Well-known freedom fighter, founder of Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan, Governor of U.P. and famous Gujarati writer Kanaiyalal Maneklal Munshi who had worked with Shri Arvind Ghosh in Baroda read and wrote preface of this wonderful creation by Navalram. This book was published by National Literature Institute (રાષ્ટ્રીય સાહિત્ય કાર્યાલય) He has mentioned that it was the first book of this kind for the benefit of Gujarati readers.

His book “Gramymata” was published in 1938. It is containing simple easy to understand selected poems useful to School and College students from ‘Kalapi no Kekarav” a book earlier published by Poet Shri Kant.

In 1939 Gujarat vernacular Society assigned him to write an independent book on Kalapi. This book was titled “Hraday Triputi and other poems”. At the beginning of this book in order to give idea about personal and married life of Kalapi and his work to readers what Shri. Kanailal Munshi had written in ‘Kalapi Album’ is reproduced. |}
