Guava Island is a musical film directed by Hiro Murai (his feature directorial debut) with a screenplay by Stephen Glover. It stars Donald Glover and Rihanna in the lead roles of Deni and Kofi, respectively, and is scheduled to be released on April 13, 2019, by Amazon Studios through Amazon Prime Video.
Plot
The film opens with an animated folk tale about the origin of Guava Island and the music that Deni Maroon (Donald Glover) plays, narrated by Kofi (Rihanna). Kofi and Deni live together and she wakes up to Deni playing a tune on the guitar. Deni, a local celebrity, rushes out of the house and is greeted by many passerbys on the street on his way to work. The whole town is looking forward to his festival. He is mugged by a group of kids he knows and he convinces them not to rob him. Kofi works as a seemstress with Yara (Letitia Wright). Deni works for Red Cargo (Nonso Anozie), a business magnate on the island. While at work, an employee details what he would do if he were able to immigrate to America, which Deni segues into This Is America. A dance montage like the one in the song's music video ensues, astounding the employee. Deni is then kidnapped and taken to Red Cargo's office. Red bribes Deni into canceling his festival so that it wouldn't interrupt productivity the next day and destroys his guitar; he gives him an alibi for Kofi (which she doesn't buy). Deni finishes the song he promised to write her ever since they were children (Summertime Magic) and serenades her. They are interrupted when Deni suddenly has to go, and she isn’t able to tell him at that moment she is pregnant. Kofi expresses to Yara that she is reluctant to tell him because of his free spirited lifestyle. Deni decides to do the festival anyway, performing Saturday. The occasion is interrupted by gun shots and Deni runs to safety—before being assassinated. Red Cargo is delighted with the development only to find out all his workers have left to go to a joyous blue-themed memorial for Deni. Kofi says they finally got their day off. Kofi tells their child a new and improved version of the story.

Production
In August 2018, it had been reported that actors and musicians Donald Glover and Rihanna had been filming a secret project in Cuba titled Guava Island throughout that summer. Glover's Atlanta collaborator Hiro Murai was directing, with Letitia Wright and Nonso Anozie also involved.[3]
Release
The trailer for the full-length movie premiered on November 24 at the PHAROS festival in New Zealand.[4] The footage featured Glover singing and strumming a guitar while in the presence of Rihanna, who plays his girlfriend on screen.
On April 5, 2019, advertisements for Guava Island appeared on Spotify indicating something happening on "Saturday Night | April 13". That same weekend, Glover is set to perform at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. The 30-second advertisement features Glover singing, and ending with "I'll see you at the show, everyone". Clicking the advertisement leads to the Rap Caviar playlist curated by Spotify, which is currently "presented by Guava Island" for Spotify users.[5][6] A billboard showcasing the same advertisement art also appeared in Bushwick, Brooklyn.[7] It was later revealed Amazon Studios would distribute the film, and Regency Enterprises had financed the film, with it being released on April 13.[8]
