Sasha Grey (born Marina Ann Hantzis,[3] March 14, 1988) is an American actress, model, musician, writer, and former adult film actress.[4] She won 15 awards for her work in adult film between 2007 and 2010, including the AVN Award for Female Performer of the Year in 2008.[5] In 2011, she published the photo book Neü Sex about her time as an adult actress.

She has been featured in music videos,[6] documentaries,[7] advertising campaigns,[8] art,[9] and magazines.[10] After her 2009 feature film debut as the lead in Steven Soderbergh's The Girlfriend Experience, she starred in independent films such as Open Windows and in the Canadian black comedy horror film Smash Cut.[11] In 2011, she played a fictionalized version of herself in the HBO comedy-drama series Entourage.

Grey was a co-founder, singer, and writer of aTelecine,[12] an industrial music band.[13] She is the author of The Juliette Society trilogy, and also writes, directs, and co-produces films and music videos.[14][15]

Background

Grey was born in North Highlands, California, to a working-class family.[1] Her father was a Greek-American and mechanic, he died in June 2015.[16] Her mother is of English, Irish and Polish descent.[17] Her parents divorced before she started middle school, and she was subsequently raised by her mother, who remarried in 2000.[1] Sasha Grey grew up Catholic.[18]

Grey attended four high schools, among them Highlands High in California, and was unhappy in each one,[1] though she graduated a year early at the age of 17.[19] In late 2005, she attended Sacramento City College and took classes in film, dance, and acting.[20] She waited tables at a steakhouse until March 2006 and saved $7,000 for a move to Los Angeles.[1]

Career

Dave Navarro with Grey in 2007

In May 2006, Grey moved to Los Angeles and performed in hardcore porn. Originally she toyed with the name Anna Karina,[1] taken after the French New Wave actress, before deciding on her present name. The name "Sasha" was taken from Sascha Konietzko of the band KMFDM,[21] and "Grey" represents Oscar Wilde's novel The Picture of Dorian Gray,[22] or the Kinsey scale's varying levels of homosexual and heterosexual attraction.[23][24]

Her first scene was an orgy with Rocco Siffredi for Fashionistas Safado: The Challenge by John Stagliano. Grey quickly made a name for herself in the adult film industry after she asked Siffredi to punch her in the stomach; she later stated that she was improvising.[25] In January 2007, Grey was the recipient of awards for "Best Three Way Sex Scene" in Fuck Slaves and "Best Group Scene" in Fashionistas Safado: The Challenge at the 24th AVN Adult Movie Awards.[26]

Grey at Exxxotica in 2009

In 2008, she became the youngest woman to win the AVN Female Performer of the Year Award award.[27] She also won in the category "Best Oral Sex Scene" for Babysitters at the 25th AVN Awards.[28] Dave Navarro's film Broken starring Sasha Grey won the AVN Best High End All-Sex Release award.[29][30] In 2008 Grey announced that she would represent herself in the adult industry through her own agency, L.A. Factory Girls.[31] Grey played in Pirates II: Stagnetti's Revenge. The film won in 15 categories at the 26th AVN Awards ceremony in 2009.

Grey has indicated particular appreciation for the work of adult film director Andrew Blake and pornographic actress Kimberly Kane.[32] A. O. Scott of The New York Times described her pornographic career as "distinguished both by the extremity of what she is willing to do and an unusual degree of intellectual seriousness about doing it."[33] In 2009, she was voted No. 1 on Genesis magazine's 11th annual edition of its "Porn's Hot 100" issue; in the 10th edition 2008 she was No. 6.[34][35]

According to the Miami New Times, Grey has performed in around 190 adult films; she also directed Birthday Party and The Seduction (2009).[36][37][38] Grey filmed her last adult film at age 21 in 2009.[39] She officially announced her retirement from adult films on Facebook in April 2011.[40] In 2010, in an interview with Maxim, Grey stated that her parents were not happy with her involvement in the adult film industry, but that they were on good terms nonetheless.[7]

Media coverage

Less than six months after entering the adult industry, Grey was featured in the November 2006 edition of Los Angeles where she was flagged as a potential major star, perhaps the next Jenna Jameson.[1] In December 2006, Grey was interviewed on the syndicated entertainment industry news program The Insider.[41] In February 2007, she appeared on The Tyra Banks Show, discussing teenagers in the sex industry. There was speculation that the show was heavily manipulated through editing, and did not include her defense of adult film as a career choice. The show was also criticized for doing this to increase its dramatic value.[42][43]

Grey was named Penthouse's Pet of the Month for July 2007, shot by fashion photographer Terry Richardson.[44][45] Grey was profiled in the December 2008 Rolling Stone magazine.[46] Grey has appeared in Playboy twice, first in a December 2009 pictorial, and then for the cover feature in October 2010.[4][47][48] In 2011, she was named by CNBC as one of the 12 most popular stars in adult film. CNBC noted that her mainstream roles have kept interest in her earlier adult film work high, and several companies continue to release compilations of it.[49] The November 2013 issue of Penthouse listed Sasha Grey in their variant of a Dirty Dozen,[50] and Men's Health placed Grey as No. 85 in "The 100 Hottest Women of All Time".[51][52]

Modeling

Grey has modeled for Max Azria's line Manoukian,[53] footwear brand Forfex,[8] American Apparel,[54] Lovecat,[55] Exit,[56], Interview Germany,[57] Max,[58] and Fault.[59] Grey modeled for Richard Kern as a part of Vice magazine's anti-fashion layout.[60] She appeared in his book and in the three-part VBS.tv program Shot by Kern.[61]

Grey appeared in Taschen's 25th anniversary reprint of Terry Richardson's Terryworld.[62] Among other collaborations with Richardson,[63] she appeared in Wives, Wheels, Weapons,[64] a companion book to James Frey's Bright Shiny Morning. She has modeled for artists James Jean,[65] Zak Smith,[66] David Choe,[67] and Frédéric Poincelet,[68] who also created the artwork for aTelecine's ...And Six Dark Hours Pass album.

In 2010 Julião Sarmento featured four actresses including Grey in his video-installation Leporello.[9][69][70] She was featured in the Richardson magazine A4.[10][71] Richard Phillips created a Sasha Grey short film in the Chemosphere for the Gagosian Gallery in 2011 and portrayed her for the Frieze Art Fair in 2013.[72][73][74] Hypocrite Design described Sasha Grey in the eponymous short film as a "perpetually evolving figure".[75]

In an interview with Allure in 2018, Grey said that her look was "definitely punk-inspired, definitely the anti-aesthetic, and I've definitely grown out of that because I'm older".[76]

Acting

The Girlfriend Experience (2009)

Grey appeared in a 2009 episode of James Gunn's PG Porn with James Gunn,[77] had a cameo appearance in Dick Rude's 2010 independent film Quit (about smoking cessation),[78] and starred in the 2009 Canadian low-budget black comedy/horror film Smash Cut with David Hess from the Ottawa-based Odessa/Zed Filmworks.[11][79] She plays a TV news personality who goes undercover as an actress in a horror film production, only to discover her older sister's murderer.

In Academy Award-winning director Steven Soderbergh's film The Girlfriend Experience Grey played the lead role, "Chelsea", an escort who is paid to act as her clients' girlfriend.[80][81] Soderbergh cast her after reading her profile in Los Angeles magazine.[1][32] In having Grey prepare for her role in The Girlfriend Experience, Soderbergh asked her to watch Jean-Luc Godard's Vivre sa vie and Pierrot le Fou, both starring Anna Karina.[82] Grey and Soderbergh also interviewed two escorts, and borrowed character traits and behavior from them.[32][25] Critics had mixed assessments of Grey's performance.[83][84][85][86] Entertainment Weekly found the film "mysterious and arresting", and New York commented that the actors "appear to be improvising (badly)".[87] Violet Blue annotated that "Grey herself is as complex and layered and mesmerizing as a Soderbergh film itself -- that's why Grey's fans cross all kinds of cultural and moral divides".[88] On Rotten Tomatoes the film received a rating of 66% based on 138 reviews.[89] In 2016, Glenn Kenny who played the majordomo of an escort-review site, described the Girl Friend Experience as "digital film from another era" with most scenes two-handers.[90]

Also in 2009 she played the Vulcan Chandra in the parody This Ain’t Star Trek XXX directed by Axel Braun with Evan Stone as Captain Kirk, who won an XBIZ "Male Acting Performance of the Year" award for Star Trek XXX.[91] Grey played a fictionalized version of herself in the seventh season of the HBO series Entourage. Her character was Vincent Chase's new girlfriend in a multi-episode arc.[92] The season got a 57% rating (13 fresh, 10 rotten) on Rotten Tomatoes.[89]

Grey played Raven in the thriller I Melt With You directed by Mark Pellington which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 26, 2011.[93] She then starred in the Indonesian film Shrouded Corpse Bathing While Hip-Shaking premiered on April 28, 2011,[94] also known as Membunuh: Murder in the Internet Movie Database. The 2012 horror-thriller Would You Rather directed by David Guy Levy, where Grey played Amy, got a critics consensus rating of 59% based on 22 reviews at Rotten Tomatoes,[89] and a critic noted the similarity of Amy's role as "unflinching in the wildest of circumstances, when vying for a hefty sum of cash at the expense of the health" with Grey's career as adult actress.[95]

She voiced the character Viola DeWynter in the 2011 video game Saints Row: The Third  and in 2015 for Saints Row: Gat out of Hell.[96] In 2013, Mariya Ocher led Sasha Grey to nightlife locations in Hamburg—Grey ignored the "women prohibited" barrier of the Herbertstraße—in the documentary series Durch die Nacht mit ....[97] In 2014 she starred with Elijah Wood in Open Windows directed by Nacho Vigalondo.[98] Nikola Grozdanovic observed that "all of Open Windows is constructed in a way for all of the action to unfold through some kind of computer screen".[99] The Tomatometer critics consensus for Open Windows was 40% based on 40 reviews.[89] In 2017, she and Danny Trejo starred in the arthouse thriller China Test Girls directed by Frankie Latina featuring music by Yoko Ono.[100] In 2009, she was a co-producer of Latina's Modus Operandi also starring Danny Trejo.[14][101]

She appeared in music videos for The Smashing Pumpkins' 2007 song Superchrist,[6] and for The Roots 2008 song Birthday Girl.[102] In 2011, she appeared in the music video for Eminem's song Space Bound premiered on Vevo.[103][104] Grey plays the role of Eminem's girlfriend, whom Eminem strangles only to realize she is just a figment of his imagination.[105]

Music

Grey is listed by the Narnack Records website as a guest artist on Repentance by Lee "Scratch" Perry,[106] though Perry himself denied her involvement in a 2009 interview.[107] In 2008, Grey began an industrial music collaboration, called aTelecine, with Pablo St. Francis.[13] They later added members Anthony D' Juan and Ian Cinnamon.[12] Their first EP, aVigillant Carpark, was released in 2009 by Pendu Sound on 7-inch vinyl only.[12] Grey also contributed vocals to the Current 93 album Aleph at Hallucinatory Mountain.[108]

L.A. interview in July 2012

In 2010, aTelecine released their first LP, ...And Six Dark Hours Pass, and followed it up with the first of three A Cassette Tape Culture compilations.[109] Grey described aTelecine as "experimental noise",[40] The Village Voice suggested electronic / ambient / minimal,[110] and Todd "Pendu" Brooks noticed dark ambient and "death-dub".[12] In 2011, aTelecine's first full-length album, The Falcon and the Pod, was released.[111][112][113] Paul Maher Jr. compared Sasha Grey with Cathy Ames in John Steinbeck's novel East of Eden, described the ambient tracks of aTelecine as aural wrecking balls, stated that Grey's artistic temperament comes close to Marquis de Sade as "a proponent of freedom tethered to its furthest extremities, yet untethered by laws, morality or religion", but admired her courage and audaciousness.[114]

In 2012, Grey covered Nico for the X-TG album Desertshore.[115] The first live concert of aTelecine took place on October 20, 2012, in Kraków at the Unsound Festival.[116] In July 2013, it was announced that Ian Cinnamon and a new vocalist were the only remaining full-time members after Grey had left the band.[117]

In 2014 Grey and Jayceeoh produced Heat of the Night featuring Bella.[118] In 2015 psytrance band Infected Mushroom featured Grey's vocals in their album Converting Vegetarians II in the track Fields of Grey.[119] In 2016 Grey contributed to the Death in Vegas album Transmission.[120] The former Throbbing Gristle members Chris & Cosey remixed Consequences of love—a Transmission song performed and composed by Grey and Fearless—and in 2017 Michael Mayer adapted the Chris & Cosey remix in his DJ-Kicks album.[121][122] In 2018 Death in Vegas published the single Honey with Grey as writer, singer, and film director of the Drone Records video.[15] In August 2018, PIG published That's The Way (I Like It) featuring Sasha Grey and premiered on Pornhub.[123]

Since 2010, Grey has regularly performed as DJ and published some of her mixes on SoundCloud.[124][125][126] In an interview Grey explained how she arrived at using CDJs, USB-sticks, and SD cards.[127] Earmilk editor David Sikorski considered her mixes as "testament to her wide range, eclectic taste in music and her ability to understand the mechanics of solid electronic music production."[128][129]

Books

Grey signing books at FIL 2013

Grey's photo book Neü Sex was released on March 29, 2011.[130][131]

Her second book, The Juliette Society, an erotic novel, was released on May 9, 2013.[132][133] Karley Sciortino summarized it as a "satirical, erotic novel that follows Catherine, a film student who enters a secret, elite sex society", and in her interview Grey stated that she paid homage to novels like The 120 Days of Sodom, Thérèse the Philosopher, and Voltaire’s Candide.[134] Alisande Fitzsimons confirmed that The Juliette Society contains various references to classic erotic literature and film,[135] and Cosmopolitan UK stated that it is "erotica with a difference".[127]

In 2016, book II The Janus Chamber and in 2018, book III The Mismade Girl of The Juliette Society trilogy were published.[136][137] Grey described The Juliette Society as a bit autobiographical.[18] Allen Foster wrote that The Janus Chamber is a "a brilliant work of literature", much more Satyricon than Fifty Shades of Grey, where Grey's "wry sense of humor reveals itself in the obscure pop culture references".[138]

Personal life

Grey identifies herself as existentialist[22][139][140] and bisexual.[141] She was in a long-term relationship and engagement with Ian Cinnamon, who is 13 years older than she. The couple split up in 2013.[117][24]

In February 2010, Sasha Grey and Joanna Angel were Sex Week at Yale panelists.[142][143] In a March 2014 interview, Grey spoke in defense of the adult industry and on behalf of outed Duke University student turned adult film star, Belle Knox.[144]

In a May 2016 interview, rock and pop culture critic Art Tavana compared Grey with Madonna describing her as defiantly feminist and as novelist, EDM DJ, sex-positive feminist, Formula 1 racer or action star — no matter what it is, it's more than "ex-porn star."[145] In 2009, Meghan O'Rourke wrote that Grey "sees her extremity as helping to liberate female sexuality", but she called Grey's persona "a clever marketing tactic".[146] Vanessa Grigoriadis stated that "what’s most important about her is her impact on feminism" and compared her with Taylor Swift.[24][147] In a 2011 interview with Journal Frankfurt, Grey commented that she dislikes the term "feminist", saying that she would be a "post-modern feminist" if she was one.[148]

Grey is a cinéaste—this explains her 2006 alias Anna Karina—and likes the Italian film director Antonioni,[149] French New Wave filmmaker Godard,[67] Danish Dogme 95 director Lars von Trier,[39] New German Cinema filmmaker Herzog,[150] feminist filmmaker Catherine Breillat,[147] and American filmmaker David Lynch,[151] among others. MovieLine recognized her as "Twitter’s Art-House Eulogist".[152] Sasha Grey described herself as David Bowie fan and contributed to a French homage after he died in 2016.[153][154] Other musical influences include KMFDM,[155] Throbbing Gristle, Coil,[116] and Nine Inch Nails.[147] Grey collects vinyl,[127] and her motto is Lotta continua.[156]

Activism

In 2010, Grey supported a PeTA campaign to curb the overpopulation of dogs and cats by spaying and neutering in a nude video.[157][158] Later in this year she published her thoughts on the Mark Sanford extramarital affair in an op-ed for Newsweek 20/10.[159]

In November 2011, Grey participated in a guest reading program at Emerson Elementary School in Compton, California. Some parents complained, and Grey responded to the controversy by stating, "I committed to this program with the understanding that people would have their own opinions about what I have done, who I am, and what I represent."[160][161] Grey also appeared on the American talk show The View, where she explained that she thought the parents should have been given prior notice of the identity of anyone who did guest reading, and that if parents had objected to her, she would not have done it.[162]

In March 2012, she published a video supporting Equal Pay Day.[163][164] In July 2013, shortly after the National Security Agency's PRISM surveillance program was first publicized, Grey starred in a Funny or Die "Sexy NSA Commercial" parody.[165] Since 2017 she supported Planned Parenthood.[76][155] Grey supported Bernie Sanders during the 2016 Democratic Party presidential primaries.[145]
