A fire broke out in the roof space of Notre-Dame de Paris in Paris, France on 15 April 2019[1] at 18:50 CEST.[2]
It is suggested that the fire could be linked to renovation works at the building,[3] after an emergency appeal in 2018 when it was deemed in need of maintenance and restoration.[4] The island of Île de la Cité on which Notre Dame stands has been evacuated.[3] [5] Flames engulfed the upper part of the cathedral including its two bell towers and the central spire, which collapsed. [6] Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo has described it as a "terrible fire".
A schedule found on the Notre-Dame website shows that there was a Mass happening at the time of the fire, between 18:15 and 19:00.
