Jacques Jarrige is a French sculptor and designer, born in December 1962, in Paris, France to a family of art collectors and scientists. His work is known for its fluid organic forms which are hand wrought from simple materials.
His works have been acquired by the Mobilier National, the Musée des Beaux-Arts d'Orléans, Fonds national d'art contemporain. [1]
Career
Jacques Jarrige briefly studied architecture at Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts,[2] but abandoned his architectural studies in favor of making functional sculpted objects and avant-garde furniture in the 80s.
Influenced by the artists Henry Moore and Alexander Calder and the furniture of George Nakashima and Alexandre Noll, he began experimenting with humble and raw materials — a practice he became known for — patiently shaping, molding, and altering them with simple hand tools.[3][4]
Since 2010 - after gaining representation with Valerie Goodman Gallery - he has been regularly showing in the United States and in those years, his objects have become increasingly free and dynamic — even some of his furniture seem like drawings in space, while his wood, aluminum and brass sculptures have reached a new monumentality without losing their fine-boned elegance. [5]
At the same time, Jarrige started to experiment with making small jewelry as a way for him to stay busy while away from his studio. This work was a new form for Jarrige but spoke the same design language as his grander objects, on an intimate scale. He began to work directly within the limitations of the human body as a physical space, developing new forms to unify with the lines and movements of the wearer’s body. These striking bands and pendants of energetically hammered metal feel more like intimate companions than ornaments. The results are most often hammered metal pieces that evoke the sepals, petals, and stamen of flowers, pushing at and focusing attention toward the wearer. This body of work was first shown at MAD (Museum of Arts and Design) as part of The Loot Show, 2015.[6]
These explorations in jewelry quickly informed new larger works, and instilled an approach that had not been there before. Jarrige began working less in the realm of design and furniture and more within pure abstraction, which quickly became the new driving force of his practice. Between 2016 and 2018, his large scale sculptures were installed in the French Consulate in New York, at the Queens Museum in two exhibitions curated by Vida Sabbaghi, in a municipal community center outside Paris, and in private residences and experimental art spaces such as the old Pfizer building in Brooklyn.
He continues to exhibit internationally at galleries and institutions, in collaboration with Cope NYC at the Queens Museum and various public spaces. With Valerie Goodman Gallery, he has also had four solo exhibitions. [7][8]
