Sandeep Ranade (alias Naadrang; born 1981) is an Indian Classical khayal vocalist from Pune regarded as the "torch" of the Mewati gharana's future.[2] Best known as the creator of NaadSadhana for iOS,[3] he is regarded for his work about the techniques, aesthetics, and philosophy of music articulated as a contemporary "naad yoga".[4]
Background
Born in Bangalore, Ranade began learning music at an early age and gave his first public performance at age 6.[5]
After completing his B.S. in Computer Engineering at the University of Pune, Ranade relocated to the United States to earn his M.S. in Computer Science at Johns Hopkins University.[6] Following, he spent a decade working full-time as a software engineer at companies like Microsoft, Citrix, Cirtas, VMware, and Google.
Ranade performed music extensively[7] across North America during that time.[8] He later returned to Pune to focus on music, teach, and build a start-up.[9]
Career
Ranade has performed throughout North America and India.[10] As a supporting vocalist, he has accompanied Pandit Jasraj twice at the Sawai Gandharva Sangeet Mahotsav.[11]
As a soloist, he has performed for SPICMACAY, the Pt. Jitendra Abhisheki Sangeet Mahotsav (Goa), the Bhimsen Joshi Sangeet Mahotsav (Sangli), and Swar Zankar (Ahmednagar) in addition to numerous festival appearances and baithaks. He has performed jugalbandis with prominent musicians like Ronu Majumdar, Debjyoti Bose, Kala Ramnath, and Aditya Oke.[12]
Musicianship
Ranade is considered a leading musician of the Mewati gharana and disciple of Pandit Jasraj.[13] He has incorporated principles from engineering and mathematics, nutrition and physiology, and neuroscience with insights about mindfulness, aesthetics, and history to develop his music.[14]
Gurus
Ranade began learning music from Anjali Joglekar-Ponkshe, a disciple of Gangadharbuwa Pimpalkhare, from the age of five for 10 years.[15] Following, he began training Dr. Shobha Abhyankar, the mother of Sanjeev Abhyankar and disciple of Pimpalkhare and Pandit Jasraj.[16] Until her death, Dr. Abhyankar provided Ranade with advanced training in the Mewati gayaki and deep background in the theoretical, technical, and aesthetic approaches to khayal, raagdaari, and riyaaz. Since meeting him at the Vedic Cultural Heritage competition in 2004, Ranade has been learning with Pandit Jasraj.
Teaching
Ranade has students across the world and provides talim directly and remotely using Skype video calling[17] and courses on Gumroad.[18]
Compositions
Under the mudra "Naadrang," Ranade has created 74 musical compositions (khayals, taranas, thumris, ghazals, bhavgeets, bhajans, and multi-genre songs) in various raags and taals. The structures, themes, and grammar of Ranade's compositions are regarded for exploring expressions beyond the nine rasas.[19]
NaadSadhana for iOS
Ranade has developed an iOS app for practicing riyaaz and developing shrutis, called "NaadSadhana".[20] The app has been praised by various musicians like Ulhas Kashalkar,[21] Suyog Kundalkar,[22] Milind Kulkarni,[23] and Tanmay Deochake.[24]
Utilizing AI, NaadSadhana utilizes iOS's low-latency capabilities[25] for responsive feedback.[26] Ranade's app has been praised as "world-class" by technologists and musicians."[27]
