Andre Beteille, FBA (born 30 September 1934) is an Indian sociologist and writer. He is well known for his studies of the caste system in South India. He was a Professor of Sociology at the Delhi School of Economics at the University of Delhi where, since 2003, he remains Professor Emeritus of Sociology.[1] He was appointed National Research Professor by the Government of India in 2007.[2] He is a recipient of the Indian civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan.[3]
Presently he is the Chancellor of North Eastern Hill University, Shillong, Meghalaya [4] and prior to that he was the Chancellor of Ashoka University.[5]
