Simona Halep was the defending champion, but lost to Amanda Anisimova in the quarterfinals. Anisimova was the first player, male or female, born in the 21st century to reach the quarterfinals and semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament.[1]

Ashleigh Barty won her first Grand Slam singles title, defeating Markéta Vondroušová in the final, 6–1, 6–3.[2][3] Barty was the first Australian player, male or female, to win a French Open singles title since Margaret Court in 1973.[4] Vondroušová was the first teenager to reach a French Open women's singles final since Ana Ivanovic in 2007, as well as the first teenager to reach a Grand Slam women's singles final since Caroline Wozniacki at the 2009 US Open.[5]

Naomi Osaka retained the WTA no. 1 singles ranking after Karolína Plíšková lost in the third round.[6] Angelique Kerber, Kiki Bertens and Petra Kvitová were also in contention for the top ranking at the start of the tournament. Osaka's streak of 16 consecutive wins at Grand Slam level was broken when she lost to Kateřina Siniaková in the third round.

Serena Williams was attempting to equal Court's all-time record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles, but lost in the third round to Sofia Kenin.

For the first time since the 1978 Australian Open, none of the four semifinalists had previously reached a Grand Slam singles final. Of the four, Johanna Konta was the only one who had previously reached a Grand Slam singles semifinal.
