History

After splitting from Albany Union High School in 1971,students that were entering as Seniors that year, were given the choice to stay and graduate from Albany Union or go to South Albany High School and be part of the first graduating class from there. The school chose "Rebel" as their mascot ; athletic teams we nicknamed "the Rebels”.[5] The Rebel was removed and changed to the RedHawk on April 25, 2018.[6]

The school's colors are red and grey.

School colors are to remain the same.[7]

Sports

In 2004, the cheerleading program placed second against 5A and 6A teams at state competition, as well as winning all pre-state competitions. The school also had six All-Americans, three Les Schwab Bowl participants, and qualified for nationals. The football, soccer, dance and cheerleading programs have all gone to either district playoffs/championships or state championships in recent years. In 2016, the cheerleading program qualified and competed at the National High School Cheerleading Competition. The dance team, the Southern Belles, won state championships in 2014, 2015, and 2017 in the 5A division at the OSAA Dance and Drill State Championships. In 2018, SA football won league champs along with the warriors and qualified for the playoffs. Along with the varsity basketball boys team qualified for state and placed 6th in 5A rankings overall.

Academics

In 2008, 75% of the school's seniors received a high school diploma. Of 308 students, 231 graduated, 42 dropped out, and 13 received a modified diploma, and 22 were still in high school the following year.[8][9] By 2018, 88% of the 302 seniors graduated. Twenty-eight students dropped out that year.

April Fire's Day

Inside the main office building.

On April 1, 2015, students and parents woke up to a news story that sounded like an April Fools' Day joke. Classes were cancelled for the following days due to a large fire that had destroyed the school's choir room, cooking class rooms, band room and cafeteria, but school was resumed the following week. By 7 am, snorkel water cannons were being used to prevent the four-alarm fire from spreading to the rest of the school.[10] The man who had set the fire, Zachary Lee Burghart, was convicted a few months later for arson after pleading guilty.[11] On March 6th 2019 'Zachary Lee Burghart' wrote this apology to the community affected by his actions that night:-

To the people of the City of Albany and the State of Oregon

After much reflection I am writing you to offer a long overdue apology to the school and community that I damaged. The city of Albany asked nothing of me yet offered me so much. It was my home.
In the early morning hours of April 1st 2015 I committed a tragic crime that all the good citizens of Albany felt and will continue to feel for many years to come. My name is Zachary Lee Burghart and I started the fire that destroyed the cafeteria building on the campus of South Albany High School. I am also responsible for the destruction of a travel trailer and other personal property belonging to another family.
To the family I harmed, my name will likely never be forgotten and the apologies from my heart are hardly a whisper. How do you explain that you are truly sorry for such destruction and intrusion of personal space to your fellow man. Risking their personal safety and violating the security of their home is more than a criminal act, it is anti-social, a slap to the face of all civilized people.
There is no excuse for my abhorrent behavior that night which will hold me in prison through my 30s and into my 40s. Ultimately the community will remember the damage done to their school long after graduation and for many years and it will resonate into new generation that are up and coming who will hear the story about how their school was damaged, likely without even knowing my name. This will not relieve me of responsibility in any way.
I make this sincere apology and regret for my actions not because I am in prison or that some people think I should be, but because I wish more than anything that I could change what happened and taken a different coarse. It is my sincere hope that my actions forever resonate and the punishment that I received as an example of what coarse not to take and act as a deterrent to any similar behavior from others. I beg the youth and young people to seek help in times of need and to not retaliate to bad personal issues like I had at the time as I did. I hope that my example restores a sense of safety to the City of Albany, County of Linn and the State of Oregon
I will carry the personal shame or my bad choices in life with me for the rest of my life and to all those affected by my actions, I am very, very sorry.
 Sincerely
 Zachary Lee Burghart
