The Serie A has 30 teams (2 Liga MX Reserve Teams, 4 Ascenso MX Reserve Teams and 24 Serie A Teams) divided into two groups. From the 2018–19 season, it will be one long tournament (playing each other home & away) for 28 matches being played. Top 4 teams from each group at end of season will play for promotion to Ascenso MX and the stadium must met the requirements to promote as well. It was created in the second half of 2008, with the participation and approval of the owners of the teams of Second and Third Division, being next to Serie B part of the Liga Premier.
As of 2019–20 Season, 2 of 18 Teams from Liga MX and 4 Ascenso MX teams (no promotion) will be played to Liga Premier to make youth players to play in the professional league.

Below are listed the member clubs of the Serie A for the 2019–20 season.
- Toluca, América, Necaxa, Monarcas Morelia and Guadalajara Premier are discontinued due to possible creation of Liga MX U23 league
- CAFESSA[3] and Marina were promoted from Serie B.
- Loros UdeC promoted to Ascenso MX
- Atlético San Luis Premier will join the league
- Deportivo Tepic J.A.P. franchise returns in the division as Atlético Bahía.
- Marina was promoted to Serie A as 2018-19 Serie B winner.
- Atlético Saltillo Soccer, CAFESSA and Mineros de Fresnillo were accepted as new teams in Serie A.
- Due to ground problems Real Zamora was put on hiatus on 2019–20 season.
- Tuxtla F.C. renamed to Cafetaleros de Chiapas Premier
- Cocodrilos de Tabasco dissapeared.
