Harrow & Wealdstone is a Network Rail station in Travelcard Zone 5 served by the National Rail and London Underground services listed below and managed by Silverlink. The station is in Wealdstone although when the station was built the area was part of Harrow and Wealdstone's post town is still known as Harrow. Harrow. Both Harrow and Wealdstone are in the London Borough of Harrow.

History

The station was opened by the London and Birmingham Railway as "Harrow" on 20th July 1837. It was renamed "Harrow & Wealdstone" on 1st May 1897. The Bakerloo Line service arrived on 16th April 1917, was withdrawn on 24th September 1982 and was reinstated, terminating here, on 4th June 1984.

There is a disused platform on the eastern side for the former branch line to Belmont and Stanmore. Services to Belmont on the train known affectionately as the Belmont Rattler, ceased on 5th October 1964.

Notable events

Harrow & Wealdstone was the site of a major rail disaster in 1952 when 112 died and 340 were injured when a Scottish express train collided with the rear of a local train stopped at platform 4. Seconds later a northbound express hauled by two extremely powerful steam locomotives rammed the wreckage, brought down the overbridge, and demolished the northern end of platforms 2 and 3.

A memorial plaque concerning this disaster was placed above the main entrance on the northern side of the station to mark the 50th anniversary in 2002.

The station today

The station is the northern terminus of the Bakerloo Line. Silverlink Metro trains from this station operate between Euston and Watford Junction; Silverlink County services stop here between Euston and Milton Keynes; while Southern trains provide a service to Brighton via Kensington Olympia. The station lies on the West Coast Main Line, and Virgin trains and some Silverlink County services run through the station non-stop.

The station has had several improvements in the last few years, with a new footbridge, lifts for the use of disabled persons, and newly painted and brightly illuminated waiting rooms.

One entrance/exit (on the south west side - platform 1) leads toward Harrow and the other, on the north east side, leads toward Wealdstone; the footbridge links both accesses and all platforms.
