Kareena Kapoor, nicknamed "Bebo" (born September 21 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India) is an Indian actress, who appears in Bollywood films. She is part of the Kapoor family.

Family background

Main article: Kapoor Family

Kareena Kapoor belongs to the most influential film dynasty in Bollywood cinema. Her family includes the likes of her grandfather, Raj Kapoor and her great grandfather, Prithviraj Kapoor. She is the daughter of Randhir Kapoor and Babita, who had divorced when she was still young. Rishi Kapoor is one of her uncles. Her sister, Karisma Kapoor, is also an actress. Her other relatives include maternal aunt Sadhana, and cousins Shivani Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor and Nikhil Nanda who is currently married to Shweta Bachchan-Nanda who is the daughter of Amitabh Bachchan.

Early life

When she was younger she would frequently accompany her sister to film shoots. Though born into a film family, Kareena at first wanted to become a lawyer. She attended Jamnabai Narsee School in Mumbai and then went to Welham Girl's Boarding School in Dehradun. She returned to Mumbai to attend Mithibai College where she did her commerce.

She went to Harvard for summer school and while she was there she took a course in microcomputers and information technology. Set on pursuing an acting career, she completed her twelth standard and joined the film industry[1]. She also attended the Kishore Namit Kapoor acting school.

Career

Kareena's intended debut was supposed to be opposite Hrithik Roshan in Rakesh Roshan's Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai but she left the film. She made her debut in J P Dutta’s Refugee in 2000 with Abhishek Bachchan and won critical acclaim for portraying the role of a Pakistani girl. Her next movie was Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai (2001), which proved to be commercially successful, but it was films like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Asoka (2001) that brought her critical acclaim along with commercial success.

Kapoor was in great demand after these successes as she was signed on for more movies. The directors began to cash in the success of her role "Poo" from the film Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, but eventually audiences got bored of it and all her films flopped at the box office. Her career seemed to be stalled. Then the critical success of the 2004 film Chameli, where she played the role of a prostitute made critics take notice of her once again[2]. Kapoor later won the Filmfare Special Performance Award for the movie.

Films like Yuva and Dev followed for her in the year of 2004. Her performances in both were appreciated[3] [4], especially in Dev where she received the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance. Her other films in 2004 included Aitraaz, which was a moderate success and Hulchul, which was a commercial success[5].

2006 began with films like 36 China Town and Chup Chup Ke opposite Shahid Kapoor, which were both moderately successful[6]. Her performance in Omkara received much acclaim from audiences, as well as the critics[7].

Kareena's biggest success in 2006 has been in Farhan Akhtar's Don, which is slated to become one of the top three grossers of all time in Hindi cinema overseas with the highest opening weekend ever for a Diwali release[8]. In the film, she plays the role of Kamini, originally played by the legendary item girl, Helen. Her performance as well as her item number received good reviews[9].

Personal Life

Kareena is currently dating Shahid Kapoor, the son of veteran actor Pankaj Kapoor[10].

Controversies

In 2005 and 2006 Kareena was in the news for a MMS clip. The first one had a look alike of her changing and revealing her body in front of a camera and the second one was her kiss with her boyfriend Shahid Kapoor[11].

  • Kareena was recently nominated for the Global Indian Film Awards (2006) in the category for "Best Actress" for her performance in the film Omkara[13].
