Sci Fi Channel Australia is the first science fiction channel on Australian television and is owned and run by the TV1 General Entertainment Partnership.
It will begin broadcasting on Foxtel & Austar pay-TV networks on December 1st 2006. The channel will be available to Foxtel Digital subscribers on the “Laughter & Living” and “My Escape” package tiers. In the "Fun" tier for Austar Digital.
The channel will also feature a weekly movie shown on weekends.
Different to the US version of the Sci Fi Channel - ECW will not be shown on the Australia Sci Fi Channel, but will stay on FOX8.
The channel is currently in "preview mode", and is currently showing advertising promoting the launch for the channel, along with previews of the shows that will be shown on the channel when it goes live on December 1.
Media and Press coverage
The Adelaide Advertiser on 22 November 2006 reported about the demand of a sci-fi channel in Australia and had spoken to the CEO of TV1 about the new channel[1].
The official launch party of the Sci Fi Channel was held on 16 November 2006 at the Australian Museum in Sydney. Guests included Jacqueline McKenzie (from The 4400), Gigi Edgley and Matthew Newton (from Farscape).
