Abigail Varela (b. Feb 9, 1948) is a contemporary Venezuelan visual artist, best known for his bronze sculptures representing abstract feminine figures of pre-Columbian resemblance interpreted in modern style displaying poses that suggest motion.[1][2][3][4][5]

Career

Varela begins his art education under Japanese ceramist Hiroshi Kawagiri followed by specialized courses in various disciplines and techniques at the main art schools in Caracas. Through research and experimentation over many years, his art pursuit finally merges into sculpture. Varela begins by producing flat silhouetted large sculptures, soon evolving into classic cast bronzes with a polished dark finish, a style prevailing in the main body of his work. Other series of his works are made in solid aluminium. Varela´s favorite theme all along his career has been the representation of feminity in bulky shapes that somehow manage to suggest lightness and movement. Such bulky shapes have been likened to that of the Venus of Willendorf. A touch of humor may also be observed in many of Varela´s sculptures.[1] .
