Nine is the upcoming ninth studio album by American rock band Blink-182, set to be released on September 20, 2019 through Columbia Records. Following the release of their seventh record California, the band toured heavily and explored side projects. Guitarist Matt Skiba returned to his main band Alkaline Trio, with whom he toured and recorded an album—2018's Is This Thing Cursed?. Meanwhile, bassist Mark Hoppus started a new group, Simple Creatures, with All Time Low frontman Alex Gaskarth. Drummer Travis Barker, likewise, focused his energies on multiple different projects, including collaborations with Yungblud, Machine Gun Kelly, XXXTentacion, and Lil Nas X.
As stated by Hoppus in a Reddit post, he and Barker mutually decided to count their 1994 demo Buddha as their first album, making this their ninth release and thus explaining the album title. Hoppus also added that nine is the universal number of love. The band has also discussed releasing an EP shortly after Nine.
Background
After parting ways with founding guitarist Tom DeLonge in 2015, Blink-182 recruited Matt Skiba, best known as the frontman of rock band Alkaline Trio, in his place.[2] In 2016, Skiba, as well as Blink bassist Mark Hoppus and drummer Travis Barker, recorded their first album of material together, California. Produced by John Feldmann, it was the band's first album with outside collaborators.[3] Upon its release, California became the group's first domestic chart-topper in 15 years,[4] and first ever in the UK.[5] It received a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Album; the band's first.[6] Its first two singles, "Bored to Death" and "She's Out of Her Mind", charted well on Billboard's Alternative Songs chart.[7] The band supported the album with a large headlining tour in North America and Europe.[8][9] A deluxe edition of the album, containing eleven new songs, was released in May 2017.[10]
After their touring commitments were completed, the band returned home for a period of time off. Skiba returned to Alkaline Trio, with whom he recorded their ninth studio album, Is This Thing Cursed?. Hoppus admitted that he entered a depressive phase when home from tour, and enlisted friends for help on a solo studio project.[11] It quickly evolved into Simple Creatures, an electropop side project with All Time Low frontman Alex Gaskarth. The duo released their first extended play, Strange Love, in 2019.
Recording and production
The band first began recording new music in April 2018, with the band members posting photos and videos to their respective social media accounts.[12] For the first time, the band worked with not just one, but multiple producers on the project. In addition to California producer John Feldmann, the group also enlisted the work of Pharrell Williams[13], Tim Pagnotta, and The Futuristics on the album.[14]
Title
Shortly after the album's announcement, Hoppus posted the meaning of the album's name on Reddit, stating that it is their ninth album. While Blink-182 had only released seven official studio albums prior to Nine, Hoppus also included their demo album, Buddha, as an official album:
"NINE. This is our ninth album, as decided by me and Travis. Some count Buddha, some not. Some count The Mark, Tom and Travis Show. Some count Greatest Hits. Some count Dogs Eating Dogs. I'm counting Buddha, Cheshire Cat, Dude Ranch, Enema of the State, TOYPAJ, Untitled, Neighborhoods, California, and now Nine. Nine is also the number of universal love, and the number of Uranus."[15]
Release
The band announced a 2019 headlining tour with rapper Lil Wayne on May 6, 2019 in support of the forthcoming album.[16] Two days later, the trio released the lead single "Blame It on My Youth" with a lyric video online featuring famed graffiti artist Risk spray-painting the song's lyrics on a wall in a time lapse.[1]
The band announced Nine on July 25, 2019.[17]
