Management Development Institute (MDI) is a business school in India. It was established in 1973 by Industrial Finance Corporation of India and is located in Gurgaon, a commercial hub near the Indian capital of New Delhi. Its second campus has come up near Murshidabad, West Bengal.[2] The Murshidabad campus was inaugurated by Honourable President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee on 24 August 2014.
History
Management Development Institute was registered at New Delhi as a society under the Societies Registration Act of 1860 in 1973, primarily to set up an institute for training, consulting & research activities. Dr. Nitish K Sengupta, IAS was the last Executive Chairman serving during 1982-84. Dr. T. N. Kapoor was appointed the first Executive Director of the institute in 1984. The Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGPM) was started in 1994.
Accreditations
MDI is accredited by the Association of MBAs (AMBA), London, reaccredited in 2011. MDI first got the AMBA accreditation in 2005 and became the first business school in India to get an international accreditation.[citation needed] It also holds a South Asian Quality Assurance System (SAQS) accreditation, awarded in 2005 by the Association’s International Accreditation Advisory Board.[citation needed]
Ranking
Institute rankings |
---|
MDI was ranked 12 among management schools in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2018,[3] sixth by Business Today's "India's best B-schools 2017",[4] tenth in India by Outlook India's "Top 100 Management Schools" of 2017[5] and fifth in India Today's "They mean business" 2018 MBA rankings.[6]
Campus
MDI has its own campus spread over 37 acres (150,000 m2) in Gurgaon. The campus is about 12 km. from Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi. MDI has a pretty campus teeming with red brick buildings and dotted with trees. The buildings have been given names such as Gurukul, Lakshaya, Scholars, Renaissance, Parthenon etc. Moreover, MDI boasts of air-conditioned classrooms, library and computer centre, fully furnished residences for participants, executive suites, facilities and recreation areas like golf course and floodlit badminton, tennis and basketball courts.[7]
Library
The MDI library has a collection of over 60,000 books, in addition to electronic resources which include e-books, journals, databases, audio-visual materials, CDs/DVDs, e-journals, reports, case studies, conference proceedings, training manuals etc.[8]
Academics
The institute offers various post graduate diploma programmes. These include full-time and part-time programmes. It also offers fellowship research programmes.[9]
Continuing Education
MDI offers various specialized programmes for practicing managers and management faculty. These include short duration residential Management Development Programmes (MDP), In-Company Sponsored Programmes, Advanced Management Programmes (AMP), Quality Improvement Programmes (QIP), which is designed to fill knowledge and skill gaps in different functional areas. Experience required to enroll for PGDM in Energy Management is a minimum of 5 years.
Controversy[10]
The MDI Gurgaon landed into controversy after its ex-director presented documents which reflected dubious status of the institute. While the institute was established in 1973 as a joint venture where government controlled IFCI held 51 per cent stake, the institute recently submitted multiple affidavits stating itself as a private institute. Cases related to corruption in MDI are still in Indian courts.
