On August 14, 2019, a mass shooting and standoff occurred in North Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Shooting and standoff

At 4:35 pm[citation needed] local time, a group of Philadelphia Police Department officers entered a "rowhome"[2] in Philadelphia's Nicetown–Tioga neighborhood to search for drugs.[3] As they went upstairs a person began shooting from the ground-level floor through the ceiling at them,[2] and it was reported that some of the officers "had to escape through windows".[3] Six officers were hit, including one grazed on the head.[3]

The gunman then entered a standoff with other officers, staying inside the building but continuing to fire shots, and had not relented after five hours.[3] By this point, there was a large police presence, including hostage negotiators and an ATF Tactical Unit at the scene.[4] Throughout the evening and night, police called the shooter, who picked up but did not speak;[5] at one point, they group called the shooter with his attorney on the other line to reassure him. This made some progress, but he still ultimately hung up.[2] Though the police did not know how many weapons were in the building, they believe he is "heavily armed" and at least one gun is an AK-47.[2]

For several hours after the initial shooting, there had been two officers trapped inside the building with the shooter;[3] the officers on the second floor and the shooter on the first.[citation needed] The two officers, as well as three occupants of the building, were rescued by members of SWAT.[6] The shooter remains inside the building.[7]

Injuries

None of the six officers were seriously injured[3] and by seven hours after the shooting they had all been released.[8]

Separately, when responding to a call to the shooting, a police officer had a car crash and was also injured, as well as injuring a pedestrian.[2] The officer was admitted to hospital overnight for injuries sustained in the crash.[8]
