This page is about the video game character Super Sonic. For speeds faster than those of sound, see supersonic.

Super Sonic is an in-game form of the video game character Sonic the Hedgehog, first introduced in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Super Sonic is basically Sonic, transformed into a much more powerful form. In Super Sonic form, Sonic is faster, tougher, and nearly invincible (he can still die from being crushed, falling down a hole, drowning, or running out of time). To reach this form, Sonic must first collect the seven Chaos Emeralds, and harness their power with gold rings.

Overview

In many versions of the Sonic the Hedgehog games, cartoon series and comics, Sonic's main objective is to collect all of the Chaos Emeralds to prevent the evil Dr. Eggman from harnessing their energy to destroy or conquer the world. In the early Sega Megadrive original title, Sonic the Hedgehog, there were six Chaos Emeralds, all of which are different colors; this number was later increased to 7. These Chaos Emeralds are what provide the energy for Sonic to become Super Sonic. There are also Super Emeralds, which make their debut in Sonic 3 & Knuckles (when one locks on Sonic & Knuckles with Sonic the Hedgehog 3), that allow Sonic to achieve a much more powerful form known as Hyper Sonic. In some versions, there is a "Master Emerald" which contains great energy and can power entire doomsday devices on its own.

Sonic collects the Chaos Emeralds by entering special stages in which he must collect golden rings or blue spheres (in the first game, Sonic does not need to do this; he must merely break through the walls of the dimension and reach the Emerald without touching the misleadingly named "Goals"). Once the player has accomplished entering and finishing the Special Stage seven times, he must collect 50 rings in the real world and jump (double-jump in later versions) to activate the temporary power called Super Sonic.

Since Sonic Adventure, the Chaos Emeralds are mostly obtained automatically as story elements in the 3D games (with the exception of Sonic Heroes), and Super Sonic has only been playable against the final bosses with the exceptions being Sonic Riders and Sonic Shuffle, both of which treated Super Sonic as a secret character and allowed play in any stage. Also since Sonic Adventure, the Master Emerald's role is to neutralize the power of the Chaos Emeralds. So far, only Knuckles the Echidna and Tikal, being guardians of the Master Emerald, have been known to wield this power. Though the players must collect their own emeralds in the Sonic Advance series, Sonic Heroes, and Sonic Rush, Super Sonic (as well as any of the other Super characters) remains restricted to boss levels.

Physical transformations

Super Sonic's immediately notable physical difference from Sonic is his long glowing yellow spines, pointing upright in contrast to Sonic's downward blue ones — their design is often reminiscent to that of lightning bolts. In Sonic Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog, it is implied that Super Sonic's and Super Shadow's (respectively) move frantically with extreme wind, for in Sonic Adventure, Sonic was at a low altitude, therefore there would have not been much wind, and in Sonic Adventure 2, they had been in space, with no air to move their spikes. But in Sonic Heroes, Sonic is high in the sky, going higher than Eggman's fleet, and in Shadow the Hedgehog, Shadow is high above Westopolis (with most of it being torn up by Black Doom), with wind to blow his spikes around. In Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Super Sonic's eyes are green, but in Sonic Adventure, because of the power of the Dreamcast, they were able to make Sonic's eyes correct (meaning that they would be green, as opposed to the black used due to power restrictions), so Super Sonic's eyes became red (in the UK's Sonic the Comic they were always this colour, with a rotating spiral in place of a pupil). To sustain this physical transformation, Sonic must constantly collect Golden Rings, as his rings steadily decrease at the rate of about one a second while in his super form. When his rings reach zero, Super Sonic morphs back into Sonic and must again collect 50 rings in order to re-activate the Super Sonic form.

It is widely speculated that the visual appearance of Super Sonic, and the means used to assume the form, are homages to the manga/anime series Dragon Ball, in which the heroes assume "Super Saiyan" forms with spiky, glowing yellow hair, and quest for the seven mystical Dragon Balls, comparable to the seven Chaos Emeralds. If this is true, it is likely that the number of Chaos Emeralds was increased from six to seven for the first game with Super Sonic to match the seven Dragon Balls. He sometimes resembles Shadow, only without the red streaks and gold colored. Some fans speculate that Gerald Robotnik studied the ancient Echidna culture, and that Super Sonic's appearance fighting Eggman on the stone tablet seen in Sonic & Knuckles is what inspired Shadow's appearance, although this is entirely speculation.

Abilities

When Sonic transforms into his Super form, he is able to move extremely fast, and jump almost twice as high as normal. Indeed, Super Sonic moves with such speed that it is often all too easy for beginner players to lose control of the character. Fortunately, this is countered by an increase in Sonic's agility — Super Sonic can quickly and easily stop and switch directions, especially in mid-air. Also, especially in Sonic 2, the camera occasionally has problems keeping track of Sonic. Sometimes the screen will lag behind so much that Sonic occasionally dies for no apparent reason after the camera is forced to play catch-up. While coming into the Dr. Robotnik boss area at the end of the Hydrocity Zone in Sonic 3, Sonic can fly at full speed, bypassing Dr. Robotnik himself. This results in a number of glitches.

Super Sonic's other primary ability is his increased defense which is commonly referred to as "invincibility". This is normally acquired by Sonic under normal circumstances only by breaking open the box containing the eponymous power-up. When invincible, or as Super Sonic, Sonic is rendered immune to injury for the duration, and is able to deal damage to opponents simply by walking into them. He is, however, still susceptible to death by hazards that can defeat normal Sonic instantly (even if he has rings), such as drowning, being crushed, or falling into a bottomless gap. Even with a higher defense, Super Sonic is not truly invincible. He has been shown to be defeated by a surprise attack from Knuckles the Echidna at the start of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Also, Robotnik's final inventions in Launch Base Zone Act 2, True Area 53, and Exception have all been shown to take rings from Super Sonic. In episode 53 of Sonic X, Super Sonic's power and "invincibility" is not near enough to combat the Metarex Dark Oak, struggling to keep going and eventually being beaten by him.

When moving at top speed in the 2D games, Super Sonic was shown to hover just above the ground, eventually taking to full flight in the Doomsday Zone of Sonic & Knuckles. In the modern games, Super Sonic can fly at will (although this might have been intended from the start, but was dropped due to gameplay purposes).

Super Sonic has been recently shown to be able to transform other characters into Super Form using his own power. This was first seen in Sonic Heroes, and then again in Sonic the Hedgehog. The resulting Super Form is the exact same the character would have if they enabled the transformation on their own, right down to the ring drain.

Other media have given Super Sonic additional powers, including healing abilities (used on Chris Thorndyke in episode 26 of Sonic X), optical energy beams (numerous instances in Sonic the Comic), and various other energy attacks (seen in "Sonic X").

Hyper Sonic

Hyper Sonic has only appeared in Sonic 3 & Knuckles. He glows with the colors of the Chaos Emeralds, is surrounded by flashing sparks and leaves afterimages in his wake. His abilities are the same as Super Sonic's, though he can breathe underwater and has the added ability of a devastating lightning attack, aka Sonic Boom. This can be used to "double jump" in any direction and when performed, destroys all enemies on-screen, except bosses, with a bright flash. Unlike the game's Lightning and Flame Shield, the player may choose the direction of Hyper Sonic's second jump by holding a direction on the D-pad.

Hyper Sonic, as well as Hyper Knuckles and Super Tails, is acquired by obtaining the 7 Super Emeralds by completing the Super Special Stages. Note that in order to get the 7 Super Emeralds, a player must first gather all 7 Chaos Emeralds, which then allow access to the Super Emeralds.

The reason for the Super Emeralds and Hyper Forms stems from the fact that Sonic & Knuckles is essentially its own game and has its own set of Chaos Emeralds programmed within it. When combined with Sonic 3, the extra Chaos Emeralds from Sonic & Knuckles now become part of Sonic 3 and as a result, something had to be done about them. Hence, the "Super Emeralds" and the Hyper forms.

Storywise, the Super Emeralds were created when the normal Chaos Emeralds and the Master Emerald were all in the Hidden Palace and they all charged each other, the circulation of infinite power made the Chaos Emeralds grow larger and more powerful, but the power was eventually absorbed back into the Master Emerald, along with the power that Hyper Sonic, Hyper Knuckles, and Super Tails had obtained. (Some fans believe that Chaos Control brought the Super Emeralds to Hidden palace, or that two sets of Emeralds combine to form the Super Emeralds, this comes from the idea of two sets of Emeralds. Which is very clearly stated in the English manuals, and is hinted at in the Japanese ones.)

Just as Super Sonic refers to supersonic speeds, Hyper Sonic refers to hypersonic speeds.

Hyper Sonic was also the prototypical name for Sonic's upcoming Wii game, Sonic and the Secret Rings.

Appearances

Super Sonic made his first appearance in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, where Sonic could transform after collecting all seven Chaos Emeralds. The game ends slightly differently if he has them all.

In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the first cutscene shows Sonic transforming into Super Sonic, but shortly after loses all the Emeralds. During the game Sonic can then recollect them to transform again.

In Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic can again collect the Emeralds. If he does, the final stage called "Doomsday Zone" can be accessed, which was the first of many final stages where Super Sonic fights a powerful enemy, often in space.

In the combination game Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic can collect the Chaos Emeralds and the Super Emeralds, creating Hyper Sonic (see above). As Hyper Sonic, the game ending changes slightly again.

In Sonic the Fighters the player character collects eight Chaos Emeralds in order to power a spaceship to take the to Eggman's newest base. If the player can defeat all characters with Sonic without losing a single round, Sonic can transform into Super Sonic during the second round against Metal Sonic and will keep this power up during the directly following match against Eggman, the final boss himself. The Eggman battle is proceeded by a brief cutscene where a self destruct sequence is announced, causing the player's character to look around in shock. If the player reaches this point with Super Sonic, he will instead keep his usual determined focus.

In Sonic R, the player unlocks Super Sonic as a character after finding the Chaos Emeralds that are scattered across the stages. Super Sonic is the fastest character in the game, but when playing against a computer, Metal Sonic and Metal Knuckles can match his speed for gameplay reasons.

In Sonic Pocket Adventure, Sonic can turn into Super Sonic in order to fight the true final boss in space if he collects all the Emeralds.

In Sonic Adventure, Sonic transformed into Super Sonic to defeat Perfect Chaos. This is when it was revealed that the Chaos Emeralds had positive and negative powers; Chaos used the negative power to become Perfect Chaos and Sonic used the positive power to become Super Sonic. Also, Sonic is stated to move at lightning speed in order to attack Perfect Chaos. Super Sonic's quills don't stick up as much as they did in the Genesis games.

In Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic became Super Sonic to defeat The FinalHazard, which was pulling the Space Colony ARK down to Earth. This time, he was aided by Super Shadow who also used the power of the Emeralds. Whether or not Shadow used the negative power while Sonic used the positive is unclear, but he may have used the positive energy, because Shadow had good motivations. Also, it has been said that the emerald's power is infinite, so that may mean that they can support any number of super forms with the positive energy.

In Sonic Heroes, Sonic had some help from his friends, Tails and Knuckles to defeat Metal Sonic. To weaken Metal Sonic's Metal Overlord form required help from Team Chaotix, Team Rose, and Team Dark. In this case, Sonic transformed into Super Sonic and allowed Tails and Knuckles to use his energy to transform into their own super forms. In this state, they were known as Team Super.

In a rare occurrence for more recent Sonic games, Super Sonic did not appear in Shadow the Hedgehog. As Sonic was paralyzed by an alien nerve gas, it fell to Super Shadow alone to save the world by defeating Black Doom in his superpowered Devil Doom form.

In Sega Superstars, both Super Sonic and Super Shadow appear in the Sonic the Hedgehog game when one collects all 7 Chaos Emeralds and does not die.

In Sonic Riders, when the player gets the Chaos Emerald (which is treated as a vehicle) which Sonic uses to become Super Sonic. The player gets the Chaos Emerald once they finished all missions with, at least, a gold emblem.

In Sonic Advance, collecting all the Chaos Emeralds unlocks the Moon Zone, where Super Sonic fights a large robot on the moon.

In Sonic Advance 2, collecting all the Chaos Emeralds unlocks the final zone where Super Sonic must save Vanilla the Rabbit from Eggman.

In Sonic Advance 3, collecting all the Chaos Emeralds and finishing the game triggers a cutscene where Gemerl steals the Emeralds to transform into more powerful form. Sonic then transforms into Super Sonic and teams up with Dr. Eggman to stop the new threat.

In Sonic Rush, Super Sonic teams up with Burning Blaze to stop Dr. Eggman and his descendant Eggman Nega.

Super Sonic can also be found in Sonic Jam and Sonic Shuffle.

Super Sonic also appeared in a technical demo of Sonic the Hedgehog, shown in private at E3 2005 and publicly at TGS 2005. In the final game, Sonic is revived from death as Super Sonic. He then allows Silver and Shadow to use his energy to transform into their own super forms. The three then travel through past, present, and future to battle Solaris.

The comics

Sonic the Comic

In Sonic the Comic, published by Fleetway, Super Sonic was a psychotic, genocidal demon which manifested itself in Sonic's body when Sonic was under extreme stress or the influence of Chaos Energy. Unlike his video game counterpart, STC's Super Sonic would destroy things if he got angry, wanted to show off, or even when he was feeling bored. He once saved the planet from destruction for the sole purpose of being able to wreak havoc upon it himself and has been shown to take pleasure from potentially killing people individually.

Sonic first transformed into Super Sonic shortly after the events of the first Sonic the Hedgehog video game, having successfully regained all six of the Chaos Emeralds. But when brought together, the Chaos Emeralds become unstable, and radiate Chaos Energy, generating a spatial warp that sends them into the Special Zone — and when they did so on this occasion, Sonic took the full force of the energy, and transformed into Super Sonic. Consequently, whenever he became stressed or extremely angry, Sonic would tap into this Chaos Energy soaked into his body, transforming into Super Sonic. He did so once more during the events of Sonic 2, and then again during a battle in the Oil Ocean Zone.

Super Sonic's next appearance was in STC #50 during a battle with the second Metal Sonic on Sky Sanctuary Zone. Metal Sonic was delivering the Master Emerald to Robotnik on the Death Egg, which he had stolen from the Hidden Palace Zone. With Sonic and Knuckles in hot pursuit, Metal Sonic used the power of the Master Emerald to increase his strength. The ensuing fight knocked Knuckles unconscious and knocked Sonic onto the Master Emerald, transforming him into Super Sonic. He obliterated Metal Sonic and continued to pummel Knuckles before returning to normal and realise what he was doing. In STC #64, Sonic and the Freedom Fighters were captured by Commander Brutus. When faced with termination, he lost his cool and transformed into Super Sonic, destroying Brutus' right arm.

As time went on and Super Sonic became stronger, he developed the ability to fire energy beams out of his eyes, and in a dream sequence was shown to have the power to move Mobius' moon out of orbit. Each time he transformed, there was always the risk that he might kill someone out of carelessness or because he defeated the enemy too quickly and wanted to destroy something else — in his first STC manifestation he turned back into Sonic just before murdering Tails and a civilian.

A turning point came when Sonic went to visit Porker Lewis on the Floating Island. While talking with Porker in the Emerald Chamber, he was startled by the Guardian robot and fell into a pit where the Chaos Emeralds and the Master Emerald were suspended. He transformed him into Super Sonic once more, even more deranged and with a stronger lust for destruction. He ensued to attack Amy Rose and the other Freedom Fighters. Using the Tornado as a decoy, the Freedom Fighters escaped and Super Sonic obliterated the surrounding area. While laughing at his achievements, Sonic returned to normal and believed his friends to have been killed, and so went underground. The Freedom Fighters managed to track Sonic through the immense energy signals he gave off as Super Sonic, after he had transformed again during a bar brawl in Metropolis Zone. To save Sonic from himself, his friends channelled the Chaos Energy out of him, through a Star Post into the Special Zone; but so great was the energy that Super Sonic was able to continue existing on his own.

Super Sonic made his way to the Zone's Planet Meridan and allied himself with the local crime kingpin, Lord Sidewinder, but turned on him the instant Sonic arrived, leading to a showdown between Sonic, the Chaotix Crew and Sidewinder's lackies all pitted against Super Sonic. It ended when the Omni-Viewer absorbed Super Sonic and used his space/time manipulation powers to freeze time, immobilizing both of them — and leaving Sonic with no way out of the Special Zone. Eventually, however, it transpired that the Omni-Viewer had merely reduced time to a crawl and that Super would emerge, and Sidewinder was trying to retrieve him (either directly or through Nack the Weasel) in order to control his powers. Sonic and co. sealed the Omni-Viewer in the Black Asteroid so that nobody could get to Super Sonic and that even if he escaped, he would be trapped but the plan failed.

Freeing himself from the Omni-Viewer, Super Sonic used his speed to move the asteroid towards Meridan, gathering his energy while within it. Once close enough it could be seen as a small sun, and upon eventual explosion it would generate a planet-wide electromagentic pulse, disabling all electronics — and so, Sonic had the Omni-Viewer transport the asteroid to Mobius, where the pulse swept the planet and deactivated all of Doctor Robotnik's computer systems and robots. With no defenses to protect him, Robotnik was finally deposed as ruler of Mobius. But Super Sonic, meanwhile, had lost all his energy in this act and became amnesiac, being taken in by two old-age pensioners.

While the Freedom Fighters remained unable to find Super Sonic, the hedgehog himself applied for work at the Groovy Train, a coffee bar owned by the witch Ebony and her psychic friend Pajamas. The bar was attacked by Sidewinder's flunky Biohizard, out to drag Super back to the Special Zone. In the process of fighting the villain off, Super's memory returned but his new amiable personality remained; he immediately refused to ever use his powers again, for fear that if he did he would become a raging demon once more. He hid out with Ebony and Pajamas from then on, living a peaceful life. He was once forced to use his powers to save a crashed train and reverted to his old psychotic self, but his friends used their magic to restore him.

In the final Sonic the Comic story, Super Sonic was finally dying as his Chaos Energy ran out. Ebony helped him reach the site of the confrontation between Sonic, Robotnik, and the monstrous Chaos, hoping to recharge him. Chaos had absorbed all the Chaos Emeralds, and despite Sonic's protestations, Super Sonic hurled himself into Chaos, absorbing all the Chaos Energy from the creature and reverting it back into its Drakon state. Re-energized, Super Sonic was his demonic self again. To save Mobius from him, Sonic was forced to have Ebony reintegrate him with the beast, making it probable that he will again become Super Sonic in times of stress.

In Sonic the Comic's Unofficial continuation, he has only turned into Super Sonic twice (in issues 226 and 238, although technically he was in the final part of #237). In 226, he turned Super after absorbing chaos energy and then controlled by Dr. Zachary, but Zachary was distracted and Sonic was able to revert back to normal. In 237–8, he turned Super from the stress of falling to his death and was then able to viciously beat Shadow the Hedgehog into submission before reverting.

Archie Comics

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comics published by Archie, Super Sonic is one of Sonic's super-powered forms. In this series, Super Sonic first appeared in issue #4, during the series' more comical era. There, he battled a roboticized and enlarged lizard calling itself the "Universalamander" (at the end of the issue, he would still have a "super" sense of humor by putting a whoopee cushion on Antoine's chair afterwards). He would not go on to reappear until the 48-page special "Super Sonic vs. Hyper Knuckles" (Hyper Knuckles was what the comics used to refer to Knuckles' seven-emerald form rather than the higher level), and then made numerous appearances later on, including where he battled the emerald-empowered "Master Mogul", along with Hyper Knuckles and Turbo Tails, and the battle against Chaos in the Sonic Adventure adaptation. Super Sonic's most recent appearance was when Sonic discovered red-colored emeralds on an alien world, causing Super Sonic to be born as a crazed lunatic, separate from Sonic himself (not unlike Fleetway's version of Super Sonic). This duplicate's existence ended when his powers faded.

Sonic also has the ability to transform into "Ultra Sonic" when empowered by the vast energies of one of this setting's version of the Super Emeralds — it resembles Hyper Sonic in some ways, but Sonic's fur color does not change. He merely gains greater strength and speed, as well as elemental powers. In addition, in this form, Ultra Sonic can transform into various elemental forms based on his environment — Solar Sonic, Eco Sonic, and Polar Sonic to be exact.

Sonic also formed a version of "Ultra Sonic" just by obtaining a thousand rings. He was joined by Super Tails (also with 1,000 rings and a form very similar to the games' version) in a battle against Ixis Naugus.

The shows

Super Sonic never appeared in any of the three cartoons produced by DiC Entertainment, but there were a few coincidental references. For example, in the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog episode "Road Hog", the leader of a gang of rude motorcyclists (as the episode's title suggests, they're hogs) threatens to turn Sonic yellow. Also, the Saturday morning cartoon had an episode titled "Super Sonic", though Sonic did not transform in this episode, in fact being temporarily stripped of his normal powers by the wizard Lazaar. In the final episode of that cartoon, "The Doomsday Project", Sonic and Princess Sally harnessed the fury of the Power Stones, odd artifacts that seemed to have little explanation. While this process imbued both of them with phenomenal power, this was not a true "Super Sonic" transformation, as the only visual differences seemed to be a glowing energy aura surrounding the two.

It was only in Sonic X that Sonic was able to become Super Sonic in an animated series. He does this by drawing on energy from the seven Chaos Emeralds. He used this several times: once to defeat Eggman's Eggsterminator, once to overcome Perfect Chaos, once to battle the Finalhazard alongside Super Shadow, and once to combat Eggman's Egg Battleship. Sonic also uses this ability in the third season, but the new Meterax villains have the power to stand up to him even when he is in this form. Super Sonic defeated the Metarex forever with the help of Super Shadow, Tails and the Sonic Blaster.

"Dark Super Sonic"

In an episode of Sonic X, Sonic sees Cosmo and Chris held captive in a Metarex base. Sonic powers up in rage. The result is a being dubbed by fans as Dark Super Sonic. This entity is completely black except for his gloves, shoes, and eyes, which are all normal except that the eyes have no pupils or irises — they're entirely white. He is also surrounded by a blue power aura, as opposed to Super Sonic's yellow. It is presumed that this entity has all the powers of Super Sonic but none of the positive qualities. It is interesting to note that Dark Super Sonic's personality is similar to Fleetway's portrayal of Super Sonic. This can be backed up by the way Dark Super Sonic relishes the prospect of destroying the two prototype Metarex. (The devilish grin, mad cackle, and exaggerated frown, being the biggest giveaways.) However, unlike Fleetway's portrayal of Super Sonic, this form can control himself and recognise who he should attack and not. It has been theorized by fans that this version of Sonic could appear in the games if Sonic turned evil or got incredibly angry. In this mode Sonic also moves incredibly fast, but this form seems to only last a few seconds or until Sonic's anger/rage is requitted. However, it is still more than enough to destroy the two Metarex prototypes, Silver and Gold. The white eyes may be a reference to a Guyver which, like Dark Super Sonic, are creatures of pure rage and have no eye pupils, or another Dragon Ball Z reference, in which characters that were enraged would not have pupils either, like Broly. "Blinded with rage" so to speak.

Theme songs

  • Super Sonic had his own unique theme in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, but in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, his theme was just the invincibility theme
  • In Sonic R, "Super Sonic Racing" is played during the final course while playing with Super Sonic.
  • In Sonic the Fighters, "Everything" is played as soon as the player becomes Super Sonic.
  • In Sonic Adventure, "Open Your Heart" is played during the first half of Super Sonic's battle with Perfect Chaos. The game also has one song called "Theme of Super Sonic", which is basically "Open Your Heart" without lyrics.
  • In Sonic Adventure 2, his theme is likely Event 11, "Remaining Hope". "Live And Learn" is also played during Super Sonic and Super Shadow's fight with Final Hazard.
  • In Sonic Heroes, "What I'm Made Of" describes the fight between Metal Overlord and Team Super.
  • The level music for the final level in Sonic Rush (where you play as Super Sonic and Burning Blaze) is "Wrapped in Black".
  • The final battle against Solaris in Sonic the Hedgehog while Sonic, Shadow and Silver are in super form is an orchestral version of His World.
