Eleanor Patricia Smith[2] (born 5 July 1957) is a British Labour Party politician. She has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Wolverhampton South West since the 2017 general election.[3][4] She is the first MP from an African Caribbean background to represent a constituency in the West Midlands.[5]

Prior to being an MP, Smith was a theatre nurse and President of the trade union Unison in 2011.[6][7] She has also served as Chair of the Midlands Regional Trades Union Congress.[8]

Upon being elected to the House of Commons, Smith told the House that she had concerns over the use of chains in the Black Country flag because of their historic association with the slave trade, and declared that she would like the flag changed.[9][10] She would later say that her comments "had been taken out of proportion" and said that she had received "many abusive messages" over the issue.[11]
