1&1 Ionos (styled as 1&1 IONOS and formerly 1&1 Internet), founded in 1988,[4] is a Web hosting company owned by United Internet, a German Internet company. Its CEO is Achim Weiss. The company employs over 7000 people worldwide, with offices in 10 countries and with data centers in Europe and in Lenexa, Kansas.[5][6]

History

  • 1988: 1&1, a Germany-based company, assumes marketing for T-Mobile's T-Com business, called BTX. BTX is renamed T-Online.[7]
  • 1998: United Internet, (1&1's parent company) goes public with an IPO, generating $60 million.[8]
  • 1998: Puretec, a consumer web hosting product, is introduced in Europe.
  • 2000: UK office opens.
  • 2003: Begins directly serving U.S. customers.
  • 2010: 1&1 begins partnership with Zoho Corporation to deploy cloud applications in the form of its June launch of "1&1 Online Office."[9][10]
  • 2013: 1&1 expands its services to Mexico.[11]
  • 2018: 1&1 rebrands to 1&1 Ionos after integration with Profitbricks.[12]

Services

The company offers domain registration, cloud servers, virtual private servers (VPS), and dedicated hosting service.[citation needed] The company offers shared hosting packages on the Linux and Windows platforms,[citation needed] and it offers a drag-and-drop template product, MyWebsite.[citation needed]

Customers are only able to complete orders on the UK site if they have a UK address. Other customers may have German or Kansas, United States hosting, depending which Web site is used for ordering.[citation needed] There is a site available for France, Spain, and Mexico as well.[citation needed]

In 2006, the company estimated that it hosted more Web sites than any other company in Germany and the United Kingdom, and that it hosted the seventh-largest number of Web sites among Web hosting companies in the United States.[13][neutrality is disputed] As of 2019, 1&1 Ionos has 14.5% of the UK market (#1)[14] and 24% of the German marketing (#1).[15]
